FORT SÃO JORGE DA MINA (ELMINA)
The first European built fort in Ghana was Fort São Jorge da Mina (Elmina), which was built by the Portuguese in 1482 near an African village. They built it for trade with the locals, and it was also an importent stop for the explorers who tried to sail south of Africa.
Later it was taken over by the Dutch, and they used the fort mostly for slave trade.
It is a very special experience to visit the old slave forts in Ghana, firstly it is horrible to think of how they treated the native people, but at the same time it is also a very beautiful scenery and architecture.
here is a shot from inside one of the other forts.
