[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Taken on Christmas Day during celebrations at Lalibela, Ethiopia. This priest is emerging from one of the rock hewn churches in the town.

For me, this was one of the highlights of my trip to Africa. 50,000 pilgrims converge on the town during Christmas to celebrate the event. It is something you have to experience to really understand. If you like people and culture, I highly recommend a visit during Christmas. Note also, that Ethiopia does not follow the Gregorian Calender but a variation of the Julian Calender, so Jan 7, 2001 was actually Christmas Day, which is actually Jan 7, 2008 fro the rest of the world.

For some more of my Ethiopia shots, you can have a look here. I'll be uploading alot of them on TE, but at one a day it's going to take years.

Let me know what you think
John

Hello John,

This is a magnificent portrait of the Ethiopian, his leathery sun-beaten complexion providing an excellent highlight against a black background — Indeed, one of the best portraits I've seen on Trekearth. I am fortunate, but mystified how 27 viewers before me walked by the image hanging in your gallery, before recognizing its manifest assets.

But I am also mystified about the variation of the Julian Calendar they use. It seems to me that there would be a 13-day difference, but no difference in years. How does it work?

Hi John, I've always wanted to go to Ethiopia and this photo does nothing to change that. I like the composition, with the man in half darkness. You did well to avoid the white fabric being overexposed. I find his face to be perhaps a little dark and the colour a bit oversaturated. See what you think of the WS. Cheers, Steve

John,

A beautiful portrait! I love the composition and the contrast between the white robed priest and the black background!

I remember being lost date wise when working in Ethiopia (the dates on documents were close enough for one to wonder...). I remember also being lost by the time of day (the clock is set at 00:00 at 6:00 AM, so when someone proposed to meet at 3:00, the meeting was at 9:00...).

Hi John,

I just went over your PBase gallery and hen I went over your past postings here on TrekEarth. I have to be honest that over the past 12 postings, there were 4 to 5 really strong ones. But if I look at PBase, I see much more photographs with a wonderful intensity!!
A wonderful trip this must have been and a good note it also is on this event! But to some extend I have to agree with Stephen. I might have punched up the greys in the shadow and lowered the saturation in the light a little bit. Just my feel.
Thanks for sharing!!

Greetings and enjoy your Sunday!
Dennis

Hey John,
Great use of light in this photo - the lights and darks are very effective. Nicely framed off to the side... thanks for showing us this preist character!

Great exposure control. The white cloth is directly in the sun, yet still exposed very well. The face is the most important part and you have captured him with a nice little grimace. This is how I must look when I come from darkness into light. I can just here him saying "oh, its so bright!"

Excelent portrait

Wow John Paskey, those shots of Ethiopia are very good! You've got that 'humanitarian' charisma in your images...

You focused well on people and the stories you tell are amazing.

Cheers!

Jom
