When arrived at the salt mine, you will be greeted by all these camels waiting for the workers to load chunks of salt as you see in the background. Then they will begin their days-long journey across the desert to a market town where the slabs are sold to merchants and loaded on to trucks. For centuries the Afar people have mined rich salt deposits left behind from Red Sea floods in the region.
Northern Ethiopia's Afar depression—also called the Danakil depression—is one of the hottest places on Earth. Parts of the region are more than 300 feet below sea level, forming a cauldron where temperatures reach above 120 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer and active volcanoes roil.
I used flash to soften the shadow because of the strong contrast of white salt, it is like snow in the sun.

very nice the snapshot from all these camels in their sandy environment.I like the close up view, the brilliant light of the day,as the superb clarity of the scene.Well done.
papagolf21 (88259) 2014-04-21 11:27
Bonsoir, cher Way,
Je reste toujours admiratif devant vos réalisations. Une fois encore, la réussite est bien présente.
Le rendu général est excellent.
Un grand merci pour le partage.
ricardomattos (4813) 2014-04-21 11:31
A well composed image with these lovely camels in family. I like the colors, lights and sharpness too. Lovely scene !
mesutilgim (87436) 2014-04-21 11:32
Not only the capture itself but also the "title" you've given is topclass !
Nice background (both the sand and the sky at back) allows us to see every fine detail.
But my favorite here is the camelbaby at left corner taking a nap !
TFS and best regards
jemaflor (87445) 2014-04-21 11:37

williewhistler (15059) 2014-04-21 11:39
I do enjoy your imaginative title,it complements the composition perfectly, the camels which are nicely sharp and clear do appear to be awaiting our arrival...
Such a charming shot.
Best regards Les.

cornejo (34108) 2014-04-21 12:29
Hello Way, excellent photograph of this interesting and funny composition, well framed and captured in this beautiful image with good sharpness, nice color and light. Excellent and interesting job well done, congratulations my friend. Thanks for sharing this beautiful work.
Good evening and happy start to the week.
Warm greetings from southern Spain.
worldcitizen (7325) 2014-04-21 13:04
You've shown us a lot of great animal photos recently, and this is another one. :-) I especially like the camel in front, who seems to be smiling for the camera. I like the sharp division between the sand and the sky, with perfect exposure under very strong sunlight.
chrislo (4155) 2014-04-21 13:49
A wonderful group portait of these animals striking a pose for the photographer. You have shown an excellent perspective and framed the image beautifully with a strong sense of balance. Great exposure under what seems to be very harsh lighting conditions, resulting in a superb image filled with detail and stunning content. The picture conveys well the harsh conditions described in your note. The salty desert and immaculate sky provide a beautiful contrast to the camels coat. Excellent work.
lousat (79984) 2014-04-21 14:32
Hi Way,fantastic title from a fantastic place and for a fantastic pic, truly beautiful, what a idea and what a perfect choice of point of view to create this magic 3D effect, you're always a step ahead! Have a nice day and thanks,Luciano
Kamilutka (8103) 2014-04-21 15:57
I was thinking that you maybe overexposed the sand which became to white in color and then I read the note explaining the salt. Extraordinary place and so masterly presented. The camels of all the sizes and shapes truly created in here committee to welcome visitors. I like your framing which focuses on the main group of the animals but also gives us idea of the surroundings. People in the composition seem to be less important yet add some interesting element to the image.
Superb quality! TFS!
npecanhuk (68280) 2014-04-21 18:56
Very interesting and attractive picture!
Sharpness, exposure, colors and, above all, chosen pov and composition are all oustanding photo qualities that I truly enjoyed!
TFS - congrats,
adidas5nb (5671) 2014-04-21 20:39

besnard (54309) 2014-04-21 21:37
Une superbe photo bien cadrée et d'une grande netteté.
Bravo et bonne journée.
RhodieIke (11742) 2014-04-21 21:52
Hi Way Lim,
You are one hell of a good photographer, this is fantastic, your low Pov, makes us feel if the camels are right in front of us, breathing their smelly breath towards us.
Wonderful, top marks, Tfs.
jjcordier (77890) 2014-04-21 22:32
Magnifique photo, remarquablement composée et exposée. Ce groupe de chameaux, étonnamment disposés les uns par rapport aux autres, et la prise de vue au ras du sol donnent une image très originale de très belle qualité.
saxo042 (37596) 2014-04-21 22:55
A very well composed picture with a "triangle" of dromedaries at one side and some lying down as "balance" at the other side. A good inclusion of people too. Perfect colours!
fabbs99 (16803) 2014-04-21 23:37
Great shot of the camels in the salt mine.I love the simplicity of your composition.Excellent composition, good presentation too. Very well done, TFS.
federico (3044) 2014-04-22 3:01
hello Way lim, very nice shot here, the standing camels fill the scene and the background is also interesting
lucky you to visit this place, Ethiopia is really a photogenic country
abmdsudi (44968) 2014-04-22 4:06
I can only imagine vastness of this massive open salt flat by looking into the far horizontal line, a totally diff landscape that we are used to here in TE. It must be quite a weird experience almost similar to that of shooting in the white snow...albeit the hot temp! You did well with the exposure, good white balance and so much of brilliant clarity and deep rich in colours, of course the contrast is mouth watering. Not only your compo is most impressive with lovely triangular formation of the camels but the low view point renders such a great impact. The use of fill-in flash is so effective minus the enemy - the harsh shadows! on the animals. A sight to behold and another topnotch. My compliments.
Cricri (109843) 2014-04-22 4:21
Merveilleuse composition, tout bon dans le cadrage, la lumière, couleurs et qualité excellent de l'image
timecapturer (49288) 2014-04-22 4:58
a delightful shot this. Beautifully constructed and controlled. The light must have been intense here but you have managed it perfectly. It works superbly and is a captivating image.
Regards - B.
Romano46 (18472) 2014-04-22 5:05
Ciao e buona giornata
kabel (1865) 2014-04-22 6:45
Hello Way, such an out of the way place to visit but a wonderful adventure to be sure. Nice compositional style of placing the main group of camels off center. Good idea to use flash to soften the shadows. I will have to remember that.
Lots of animal portraits of late and very pleasing I might add. Thanks for sharing Ways Excellent Adventures and the high class photos too,
ikeharel (60521) 2014-04-22 7:29
Counted 8 camels, and maybe one or two behind, Way, marvelous photo on the salt-desert land.
Well divided sky and land on pic. space, in good contrast.
Impressive to look at, beautiful animals.
Kielia (23993) 2014-04-22 7:33
you are presenting the camels taken from a very well working POV! It is a fascinating impression with a fantastic perspective. The composition is very successful. My compliments also for the notes!
Didi (58098) 2014-04-22 8:52
Great camel funny scene and interesting decisive moment with the camel attitude
Do you travel for work or tourism ?
Janusz1974 (2824) 2014-04-22 10:24
Wonderfully captured moment!
Great composition. As well as the framing and the contrasts between the camels and the blue sky....very well done.
SnapRJW (31623) 2014-04-22 10:45
Hello Way - What a wonderful shot, I was admiring your light management and thinking how well you had worked with the white salt balancing the exposure across the frame. Then I read your note and saw that you used flash. This is a skill I really should master, fill-in flash has been used to great effect here. Tips and hints would be very much appreciated!
It must have been fantastic going to Ethiopia I would love to see this exotic country and look forward to seeing more of your photographs. If they are anything like this one we are in for a treat!
Bravo and warmest regards
nikkitta (15824) 2014-04-22 12:20
Welcome back with a great original post, like the camels as the main subject and the up view you chose to take the photo
Also the activity taken place at the back while them are quite concentrated to pose for your camera
As always top quality and great color contrast of salt and sky
Charming and funny capture
Well done, TFS
Add it at the Theme salt flats, hope you dont mind
May me so, people will read what you said in the very informative note
siudzi (34119) 2014-04-22 12:33
Wow! What an unique and well executed capture! You were lucky to observe this group together during such a sunny day with such a fantastic blue background. Beautifully done with great sense of the moment. TFS!

willperrett (7688) 2014-04-23 5:07
This is a fine group "portrait". A pretty daunting place to get to I should think, but absolutely worth it. Your low viewpoint works well to stress the height of these beasts, and I can almost smell and hear them. Hope it wasn't 120 degrees when you were there!
Gigidusud (17353) 2014-04-23 10:33
Splendid work scene on the salt. Excellent framing and great light management with the flash. I love it as usual!
HimalAnda (10011) 2014-04-23 11:27
The composition is very good, with these camels on the foreground. You perfectly managed to expose the picture, despite the big white part of the picture.
ktanska (25337) 2014-04-23 12:05
It's impossible to guess which corner of the earth you conquer next. But likely it has wide open landscapes off the beaten track. And well chosen for unforgettable photos.
Camel caravan on dry desert is awesome in any way but this is also immaculate portrait. Careful off-centre composition, deep perspective and strong contrasty colours.
jhm (142085) 2014-04-24 3:41
A lovely picture with these animals wait on their cargo.
Nice depth and perspective picture too.
Composition and presentation are excellent.
Very well done, TFS.
gervaso (10925) 2014-04-24 9:54
Very good capture of these animals, with perfect colors and sharpness! They look really nice! Wonderful composition! Well done!
holmertz (43293) 2014-04-24 10:35
Thanks for taking the trouble of going to this remote place, so you could show us your pictures, because I wouldn't imagine going here myself, not even for the chance of taking photos like this. You obviously did very well to use the flash in these difficult circumstances, because the light is remarkably nice, or well handled. It is no doubt a fascinating scenery, but what a tough place to live.
COSTANTINO (58021) 2014-04-25 9:02
Hello my dear friend
lovely beautiful capture with all those camels
nice background I love this amazing blue sky
and the sand as dynamic contrast
have a nice evening
annjackman (20391) 2014-04-25 9:14
Everything about this picture is excellent. The positions of the camels with one taller and strongly in the FG has made a lovely group. The flat desert landscape and the gorgeous blue sky are lovely. Superb sharpness and colours - very well photographed.
Kind Regards, Ann
rigoletto (34269) 2014-04-25 15:07
those camels did know how to give epic poses, and you certainly knew how to get them :)
corjan3 (2095) 2014-04-27 7:48
What an excellent image in really good quality and composition. Thank you also for the tip about fill-in flash. An absolute pleasure to view and an interesting accompanying note. Well done.
fotka (3769) 2014-04-29 5:09
I see, you had visited Ethiopia lately and brought wonderful picture from there.
Lovely composition of camels sitting on the white sand with the blue sky above. Perfect colors and as always beautiful presentation.
mkamionka (31537) 2014-04-30 7:50
fantastic composition, you seem to be so close and looking up to the camel. They posed so nicely together in a group. The scenery is amazing of course as well with the ground lighter than the sky. I like the asymmetry which introduces a nice feeling here.
As great as this photo is I am now looking forward to see your photos of those yellow landscapes which are quite unique for this region...
jcpix (13724) 2014-04-30 14:51
First of, I love the title...it's perfect for this scene and description! :) I've always heard camels can be quite cantankerous, so there's even a bit of irony to enjoy here.
Amazing exposure control under the bright daylight, most impressive to keep highlights in check while still extracting so much color. i especially like the backdrop of cloudless sky, the fade from a subtle purple to blue is outstanding, and helps make your "models" stand out in contrast. A fun, learned and overall enjoyable image. Great job! Hope all has been well. Take good care.
chawax (19570) 2014-05-02 2:21
Excellent shot ! The POV is excellent and the behaviour of the camel is quite funny. Great colours and perfect sharpness.
siolaw (38292) 2014-05-06 19:37
I was away for a year, and i see you posted a number of great pictures in the meantime...!
Here a nice group of camels, with an off centred compo balanced by the presence of men on each side....
Bright light on the salt is well controlled.
That looks like a HOT spot!
tatadalou (6749) 2014-05-08 9:20
Lovely welcoming committee ! The use of wide-angle lens provides a nice effect. I really love the low POV you've done and the different postures of the camels. Interesting note too. I never realise that using flash permits to reduce contrasts with shadows when light is strong. Next time, I'll try with my camera.
Thanks a lot,
kwekwekan (1078) 2014-05-10 18:21
This image really highlights your superb technical skills as a photographer. You have achieved excellent clarity and contrast despite very harsh lighting conditions. Exquisite composition as well with a long pyramid like shape created by the group of camels.
Sonata11 (33426) 2014-05-14 12:52
Wow! I missed so many beautiful pictures of yours. I like the great management of light, colors, wonderful sharpness, clarity and POV as well great like always with out any mistake. Perfectly well done. Love it.Tfs.
All the best, Barbara
delpeoples (54191) 2014-05-14 21:56
This is one of the best desert photos I've ever seen. It's almost like these disagreeable creatures have been put under your Naughty spell and have modelled exactly the way you wanted them to! I need to add "Camel Charmer" to your list of skills, aswell as NBF. Stunning colours and contrasts, I really admire how you handled the harsh light and glare so well. Top shot my naughtiest of BFFs. Congrats.
pajaran (53757) 2014-05-21 23:16
Interesantan tekst o mestu, lep pogled na kamile i trenutak ...
Dobar trenutak snimka i kontrast, lepo pokazane kamile.
Imajte lep i uspesan dan, sve najbolje.
An interesting article about the place, a nice view of a camel and a second ...
Good time recording and contrast nicely demonstrated camels.
Have a nice and successful day, all the best.
adores (39286) 2014-05-28 16:46
You have been there? This is on my list:)! Just great, with this group of camels standing in foreground, seems they are posing for the camera. I like it a lot and the quality is just great. I'm sure it was a hard place and time to take photos. Good work!
macjake (59006) 2014-07-10 11:16
now this is just awesome lol
how many people have a photo like this one in their own personal galleries - i know i don't!
beautiful lighting and exposure, the lighting conditions look so difficult here but your shot turned out just as you wanted it to.
It'd be interesting to see how this looks without the flash. Well done
dta (69552) 2014-07-11 14:36
Hello Way ,
I don't know how long you've waited to catch this scene , but the composition is just fantastic , and so perfect. 1st class quality , as usual Bravo .
ChrisJ (101919) 2014-07-13 10:17
Fantastic density levels that have given clean whites and good blacks. Perfect sharpness and well composed with the camels almost seeming to be posing. Good graphism and superb colour, saturation and upward pov. Have a nice week!
Angshu (56406) 2014-08-25 22:45
Interesting use of flash...would not have perhaps even come to my mind...and I knew something more in your thread with Delphine as well.
The up close POV coupled with the wide lens makes a fascinating impactful portrait.
Your picture reminds me of a similar one I have from Ladakh...or bactrian camels...inspires me to bring the pic out and post it as well...
Excellent work as always!
