I saw this boy sitting by the side of the rough road that runs through the native market on the way to Mount Entoto and asked the taxi driver to stop. It took a little convincing but he finally did, and I ran back along the road to where I had seen this boy.
There is something about his eyes... I wasn't sure how well he could see, or see me. He was very shy and initially withdrew inside this shed, but (with the help of my interpreter friend) I was able to coax him out from the shadows, and give him a few birr (which he is clutching in his hand) in thanks for letting me take his photograph.
Despite his extreme poverty and ragged clothes, he exuded a sweet gentleness, the memory of which has stayed with me ever since.
I have the 'before' photo in the w/s for comparison. And another w/s of a full body shot.

a class portrait Kristin... Like the boy's face so much, especially his eyes. Before reading your note I though that it is a girl's portrait. His eyes are really fantastic. Apt sharpness. Nice tonal quality... A class 1 shot. Tfs.

Hello Kristin. The portrait is the supreme discipline in photography. Each photographer has his own way. Professionals work with a huge equipment (multiple cameras, lighting equipment, helpers, etc.). Personally, I prefer the simple camera without any frills. The portrait is to show people as they really are.
The portrait of the boy is absolutely worth seeing. Especially the facial expression and the look sideways are interesting. The workshop is great. But the main picture is the best - truly masterful.
The boy is very photogenic. He would certainly be pleased if he could see this portrait.
Best rgds, Wolfgang.

I might have taken this for a girl, if you hadn't mentioned clearly it's a boy. It's probably something with his eyes and his shy but captivating smile that confused me. It's interesting that you doubted whether he could see you well, because he is clearly not looking at you or the camera, like he is adrift in dreams - or sadly going blind. It's an excellent portrait anyway, with a superb light and a perfect dark background. I'm impressed that you had your car stopped for this photo. I would probably just have thought "Sh**, there goes another good picture".

The authenticity and spontaneity of the moment with the eyes do all the talking and I like it alot which makes surprisingly his (instead of her) "beautiful" facial features stands out even more. Expression in this image is captivating as it has the subtle smile which I really love and I also noticed the angle of eye contact is level and the light has helped to bring out the sparkles and life in his eyes - eyes to the soul, the strength of this shot for me which is left to the viewer's imagination. A shot certainly provides us with a huge slice of reality there. His comfortable eyes simply melted me...
Excellent additional pictures too and credit to your immense effort in making this reality. Bravo!!

What I think you have captured here is an underlying androgyny in the face of this boy that you found intriguing enough to run back and capture. It is that essence that draws people to the shot as a portrait I guess along with those little catch lights in the eyes.

nel ws si vedono tutti gli stadi del tuo convincimento.
In effetti ha un volto molto interessante, mi ha colpito molto il sorriso.
Il suo viso è molto gentile, sembra più una donna che un uomo.
Ottimo scatto e molta pazienza.

Ciao cara Kristen
What a beautiful child. And I do mean beautiful, as he had an almost feminine beauty and softness. Perhaps it's the head covering that creates this impression. But either way, you have certainly captured the sweetness of this little boy's soul. Good tight framing, skintones and contrast. A lovely note too.

Hello Kristin - There is something special about this portrait, the child's face is hauntingly beautiful and the far-away expression has a dream like quality. I think you are right and the child cannot see with his eyes but he certainly sees with his soul. Excellent. Warm regards Rosemary

Really a very nice daily life street capture. Good composition and you framed it well.
Liked your note. And also how you came back to capture him, shows your enthusiasm. A generous act of offering him birr.
His shabby clothes telling a lot. The around his neck and head and the smile he is wearing. really great to see.
What is greater than to bring a smile to someone!
I liked the photograph.
I tried and edited and posted its workshop. Just tried to give it a different look and feel to enhance the photograph's mood. Whats your views.
Thanks a lot for sharing.
Have a nice Sunday ahead.

Firstly, thanks for the visit and constructive critique which I really appreciate. Very often it needs another set of eyes to notice the flaws even in nature. Your pointer is most helpful.
As for the shot above , what impressed me is his relax composure resulting in that free and natural facial expression which you beautifully captured. The dark background helped further to bring out the best of the mood he is in and the grey shoal is restful for the eyes of those looking at him. A wonderful shot indeed!!!

This one has stayed with me a while, and for several reasons. The most significant, of course, is the beautiful androgyny of this face. In modern western culture, androgyny speaks to lithe bodies with no gender-defining physicality. But here, the body is negated and you show us bright eyes, smooth skin, full lips, and an emerging smile. There is nothing sexy in the image, so the viewer is allowed simply to observe the raw beauty.
The rest of the scene speaks volumes. The tattered scarf and sweatshirt (not to mention the birr in hand) tell us of an austere life in a tough climate. I cannot read the bottom line on the sweatshirt, but it appears to show one of my favorite international clothing phenomena -- the pseudo-English American graphic. I'm seeing the red and white stripes on the left and assume there's an American flag there, and the red, white, and blue letter U on the right, though I'm unsure whether it stands alone or if there's an S next to it. I may be entirely wrong, but it appears to me to be a sweatshirt that would never have been sold in the US. It's just not a graphic I'm familiar with, not like I've seen 'em all, of course. But I digress...
The point I am hoping to arrive at eventually is that this foto defines "exotic" -- none of our usual touchstones can be relied upon to help us get our footing. We are left to trust in the kindness of the... "person" in the doorway.

I see what you mean about his eyes. You've done a great job in
capturing the innocent glow that his eyes project.
