This is from the southern region of Eritrea, which I visited in 1993 along with representatives of a humanitarian organization that provided wells for the locals. They obviously needed the water, because the area was very dry, as you can see here.
In one area several small boys were guarding the family cattle. I recently posted another photo from the same place and then just pointed my camera in another direction to take this photo.
This is a scan of a Kodak B&W negative.

Another good one from the bottom of your drawer !
An attitude of the boy ŕ la Cartier Bresson
maybe I'd have cropped in a square format, getting rid of most of the burnt sky

I also like this one, his pose and the composition with the cows behind him.Once again I wonder how they can find anything to eat in such a place. Good in b&w!

Boa noite Gert
Your photos are always impressives. I liked very much this one. A real scene of the daily life of the poeple from Africa. Perfect B&W. Congratulations.

Dehan haderka Gert,
An expression of the little cowboy seems happy despite his hard life, they can't cook meals without firewood in his arm.
Thanks for sharing a very nice photo to convey an aspect of Eritrea of those days.
Best wishes, Hisashi

the same image with the little boy carrying the half canes in his hands and the cow that it grazing in this arid and dry lake make the scene superb.
Yes i know that is a scan image, but if there were a bit of contrast, the shot would be a very artistic one.
I wish, you and your family a wonderful, peaceful and prosperous New Year,Danos

Hi Gert. The little shepherd tends the cow, collecting branches at the same time. A strong photo. The laughter of the boy has a lot of optimism. In fact, a remarkable photo. Rgds, Wolfgang.
I wish you a happy New Year.

The area is really dry! what the cows eat here. Nice boy, warking hard instead going to sholl, guarding cattle and probably collecting wood for the fire. Now this boy is an adult man. I wonder if the people there have a bit better life now. Impressive photo.
All the best for you in 2011!!

In spite of the desparate surrounding, this is an unusually well composed and perfectly balanced photo. There is a very pleasant line from the cow, continuing through the thin legs of the smiling boy. This is definitely not only a good documentary photo, it is also a very good picture.

A fine documentary shot with a fine crispness in the scan. The little boy looks happy. The aridity of the landscape is very obvious
Wish you & your loved ones the very best for 2011

Simple but effective composition especially that it is in B&W. I like your pov and it has a good dof with sharp details. Good contrast. Well done, tfs.

Not an image I have in mind, when one mentions the word cowboy, I see John Wayne in my mind :)
Anyway, that is fantasy, this is real life in many part of the world, boy this age should be in school, but sometimes have to help the family tending to the cows. Hopefully, this is the weekend and he was in school for his own good.
Thanks again the classic daily life shot of the past years.

I believe that sometimes colors distract the mind from the main message of a photo. As a B&W photos lover, I really like the black and white tones of this shot. Well done!
Have a nice Sunday,

It is strange, sometimes B&W seems more real than color. For sure the quality of the scan is not what we can now get with modern DSLR but the scne by itself is a very good subject.

I have not often seen the photos from this country.
Just b&w masterpiece!!! My congrats! Outstanding composition, excellent quality.

I feel great affection and respect for this little boy who is smiling amid the rugged textures and in the harsh light of the vast scenery. Life is hard and the cow grazing in this field of rocks is a striking sight. You've treated the monochrome very skillfully, bringing out the power of the light and a lot of details at the same time. There'a an attractive graphical quality and everything seems to be turning around this smile. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a good night,
