[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
A simple picture taken in the capital city, Asmara. The city is full of Italian influences. Under the control of Mussolini Eritrea (then part of Abasynnia with Ethiopia) was the focus of much of the facist dictator's attention. He hoped to make Eritrea the 'African Riviera'. Hence Asmara is full of wonderful Art Deco inspired architecture. Luckily in the struggle for indepedence Asmara was surrendered by the Ethiopian army without a fight so much of the architecture is still standing, although a little run down.

This is the main avenue, Independence Avenue. It's a wonderful place lined with Italian style cafes and shoe shops (more Italian influence there!). During the latter part of the year it often becomes crowded on a weekend when cycling races are held. People gather to watch from every vantage point - cycling is a very popular sport in Eritrea.

hi Tom, it would be a very nice image if it was not that empty - there is nothing in the whole foreground.. the light was great, the city interesting, but where are the people... very good note and a nice picture which could be nicer

Beautiful photo nice and sharp. Well done

Nice shot. I like the depth and the palms leading us into the scene. I just read a short write up on Asmara in National Geographic mentioning the architecture. I immediately checked if any photos were on TE and was upset not to find any. At least until now. This view has a Riviera type of feel to it. Good job.

Beautiful urban cosmopolitan shot of this city street. It gives good insight to those who don't realize that most Afican countries have modern cities.

I heard so much about Asmara, I know some people from Eritrea, but there is no pictures of this city on this web site.
This is a good picture and very good note.
