Photographer’s Note

Monks performing a ritual dance in their monastery outside Asmara in Eritrea. On this day in April 1993 there was a referendum in Eritrea on independence from Ethiopia. I came to this village to get some "local colour" for a news story on the referendum and was invited to visit the monastery. Everyone in the village was overwhelmingly friendly and it wasn't until I was leaving that I realized they had mistaken me for some VIP from the United Nations.

A funny continuation in the note. The photo is also good, but in my taste a bit too dark (hard to see details), but maybe you already know that.
