Photographer’s Note
From most southern point in Egypt, I go to the most Northern point, a jump of more than 1000km.
We are in Alexandria and this general view from above was taken from the top floor of the hotel I was staying in, one of many placed along the corniche that you see here. As you can see the traffic is intense and the public transportation (minibuses) dominate the line: almost every white minivans that you see are full with passengers. For the tourists, besides taxis, there are also the caleches that can be seen at left bottom. However, downtown is compact enough to walk around, and along the Corniche to Fort Qaitbey (seen at right BG) makes a healthy constitutional (35–50min).
The silhouette that can be seen in FG is from a light projector that I couldn't avoid.
As soon I got here, I noticed the mediterranean atmosphere that makes Alexandria diferent from any other city that I visited in Egypt.

Information from Rough Guide to Egypt book:
Alexandria, princess and whore. The royal city and the anus mundi.
Lawrence Durrell, The Alexandria Quartet
A hybrid city characterized by Durrell as the "Capital of Memory", Alexandria turns its back on the rest of Egypt and faces the Mediterranean, as if contemplating its glorious past. One of the great cities of antiquity, Alex slumbered for 1300 years until it was revived by Mohammed Ali and transformed by Europeans, who gave the city its present shape and made it synonymous with cosmopolitanism and decadence. This era came to an end in the 1950s with the mass flight of non-Egyptians and a dose of revolutionary puritanism, but Alexandria's beaches, restaurants and breezy climate still attract hordes of Cairenes during the summer, while its jaded historical and literary mystique remains appealing to foreigners.

Ricardo,

You chose the best direction for your main post, although including the other in the WS is a real bonus to see more of the place. You had a great view from your hotel room. It does indeed look very busy but I love the wide curving sweep of the promenade right around the bay.

Hi Ricardo.
It's a pity the light projector. You had a very good POV from that place and the view is good too.
Anyway, I don't mind the light projector, it looks quite nice.

Alexandria reminds its legend library not only for me but also for most of the people in the world. The library is a myth. The destruction of this library of the ancient times was retold many times. This caused many different factions. These were not for the purpose of chronicling the library, but for politics.
Anyway , good shot from your bird's-eye POV .Looks like a nice city (excluding the heavy traffic) surrounded by this wonderful colored water.
Congrats Ric,

never been to egypt... but the scene looks familiar... especially the minibuses, as istanbul is full of them also... loved the mediterranean look despite the concrete blocks... (istanbul was like a summer resort today with the over 20 deg. heat and the sun shinning so bright... heidelberg? brrrrr...)

Hello Ricardo, İskenderiye was also known with its legendary lighthouse, which was considered to be one of the seven wonders of the world. I wonder, if the remnants of this ancient lighthouse are still visible today.
During the Ottoman period starting from 1517, it was also one of the important ports of the Empire, along with Istanbul, Izmir, Port Said, Beirut, Salonica, etc. In quotation from Durrell, the period between Alex and Kavalalı Mehmet Ali Paşa is somehow ignored.
Let's come to the photo, I've visited only Cairo in Egypt but haven't found any chance to visit this second important city of the country. Apparently, it is more Mediterranean, rather than being Middle Eastern. The view of your hotel room is impressive. In a clear weather you can even see the Taurus Mountains in Turkey :) ;)
Best regards, Tolga

Olà Ricardo
You were not far from Ramleh place down town.
I spent with my parents holidays, many years ago in this place.
Before it was better; there is too much modern buildings now.
Obrigado

HI Ricardo,
I think that this road traffic must be every day, what a patience !!! A sight on the littoral impressive here, I like much the curve which gives a good depth to the image like your photograph of the opposite sight in WS. It misses the sound of the horn to supplement the image !!! Interesting photograph, thank you Ricardo.

Hola Ricardo.
An excellent view from the top of your hotel, the endless line of cars and minibuses are well seen, lovely colors and very good light. The curved avenue with the Mediterranean sea was very well captured. I have never been in Egypt but maybe some day will try.

Best regards.

Hi Ricardo. 35 to 50 minutes walk. I guess that must be 35 minutes if you have no camera and 50 minutes with a camera ;-). Nice capture. Good colours and excellent composition. The sweep of the bay draws the eye through the scene well. Thanks for sharing.
Have a good week, Paul.

Hi Ric,
this is one of the places I'd really like to visit, to
how much there's left of the OLD Alexandria, if you know what I mean.
I like your view over the bay and it seems that the city
is quite modern built (judging by what I can see further
down the frame and along the beach).
Cheers,
Robi

This looks very similar to our Mumbai's Marine Drive with the sweeping curve of the sea line. The colour of the sea is definitely exciting here & the number of vehicles is lesser :-) Thanks for the opposite side view in the WS, gives us the wider look & a 170 degree vision. Well done my friend & people are a bit insignificant here :-)
Best Regards

F
