Photographer’s Note

The few tourists that visit the old center of Al Qasr, go with a local guide. I didn't and it was a pleasure to get lost inside this mud-brick maze of high-walled alleyways and gloomy covered passages. People still inhabit some of these medieval houses, which make it even more fascinating, because it's like a living museum from the 10th century.

Dakhla comprises many villages with exotic architecture. Al Qasr is one of the villages, about 20km north of Mut, the capital of the oasis, and it's a must – an amazing Islamic settlement built upon Roman foundations that was indubitably Dakhla's medieval capital.
