Considering the surprising low representation of the white desert in TE, I decided to upload another one, this time with a human scale, as asked in my previous post of this area. I think the treker is small enough not to ruin the mood and visible enough to give the scale of these strange icebergs. They are made of chalk rock and created as a result of occasional sandstorms in the area.

The natural sculpture seen at right is knowned as the "Horse" and it looks like a chess horse piece. The photo was taken about two hours before sunset.

WS1 - the more knowned sculpture where every tourists go - a huge mushroom with a chicken by its side - also with a human element for scale.

WS2 - a more abstract view with 'white waves' in FG and some monoliths in the distance.

------------------------------------------------

White Desert
The area to the north-east of Qasr el-Farafra is renowned for its spectacular scenery. Although it’s closer to Farafra Oasis, it’s easier to get an excursion from Bahariya oasis, further north and closer to Cairo. The best thing to do to fully enjoy this surrealist place is to stay overnight, feel the absolute silence, the stars over your head and the magic light of sunset and sunrise. That’s what I did and also had the chance to meet a mr. Fox trying to steal our garbage in the middle of the night, which was a funny bonus. The chalk-white landscape is strewn with alien shapes, boulders of brilliant white which thrust up from the surface of the desert. At night, the clear night of noon intensifies the shapes and at sunset they turn into shimmering gold. Many of the formations are given descriptive names – sculpted by the harsh desert winds into weird shapes which constantly change over time. There are ‘monoliths’ and ‘mushrooms’, ‘ice cream cones’, ‘tents’, ‘crickets’ or ‘horses’, to name just a few of them. At some places the chalky ground looks like solified waves.

Very interesting and fantastic place, Ricardo, a unique "desert version" of the Bolivian "salares", also it has something from the Dead Sea landscape... I had not heard about this place, so thanks for the post and note, regards, Daniel

It is an amazing place.
I guess it is not very convenient to get there as a tourist thats why there are not too many pictures from this desert here.
I hope you will put some more.

You are right that putting the person helps to imagine the scale.

Hi Ricardo,
excellent and enormous sculptures of chalk in one of natures better ateliers. Good to bring the human factor for the scale.
regards, Gerrit

Hi Ricardo,
Interesting, because i know this place but never thought the sculpture were this big. I mean their size is really huge, also good to be seen in the ws version with the mushroom.
2 hours before sunset...mmmm, still to early i think despite the fact that the extreme hard light is gone. Waiting another hour would have given you even more drama in light and on the sculptures i think.
Nevertheless an interesting serie...thanks.
Regards, Henk

Ciao Ricardo,
it's really a fascinating place You did a very good work with the light balance, enhancing the contrast between the red sand and the white rocks! I appreciate that you had not over-saturated the colors, I find the softness here is a strong point. And I like also the composition with the white rock in the bottom-left angle, that gives deepness also if I would chose a small cut of it, to give the idea of the wide space.
I really like this shot, anyway.
Thanks for sharing, and for your excellent note
Laura

Hi Ricardo,

an incredible place we can enjoy more thanks both to the low sun and the walking man who give us a better idea of the size of the rocks...

Cheers,

lOïc

Thanks to the human element, it gives us a sense of scale. Strange phenomenon you got here, the warm colors are pleasing to the eye, only a bit noise on the sky due to compression i guess. Great shot and tfs.

F

Hi Ricardo,
Another excellent photo from this place. With the inclusion of the person, so that we can see the scale, the sculptures look even more impressive. Wonderful shapes too, the horse look funny. The light is enhancing here. Thanks for sharing!

Olá Ricardo,

Thanks for your this beautiful post for helping us to scale your splendid scene correctly. It's unbelievable texture. I never imagined a desert like this, amazing sight as same quality of your photo. Wonderful.

Sensacional.

Shame on me. I never heard of this place before: it is amazing. It is huge which we can see thanks to Ana as your ever-willing assistant.(?) It's difficult to understand how the wind forms them from chalk when the ground is golden sand. You composed the image well with the sweep of sand entering the frame from the corner. Very interesting post, and a new learning experience for me.
Of course there is a chicken in the WS. She is sitting on her eggs. ;D
Kath

Excelente trabajo, amigo.
Un abrazo,
Josep

good exposure, nice place, the man gives the scale, impressive rocks :)

Ola Ricardo,
It truly looks like the petrified knight of a giant chess game! Good off centered framing of the horse to have its shadow in full view, soft but rich colors, and razor sharp details... There is more happening in the deserts than i would think!
Greetings

Ricardo,
Again amazing picture from this place.
Tones and colors are just superb, a great result.

Hi Ricardo
that really does look like a horse chesspiece. What a wonderful place to be! The inclusion of the person is essential to give an impression of the vast scale of these sculptures. The evening light gives lovely warm tones, and the long shadows add form. The atmosphere here must have been truly memorable.

Hi Ricardo, as always a very crisp and clear photo with sharp details. You have framed the targets well and your POV with the human as a scale element is good and effective.

Two hours to sunset, yet the light is so strong...nothing different from here. The 'sculpture' on the right does look like a chess horse. Amazing rock formations...looking like solidified icecreams. The Workshops are excellent compliments to show us more of the place. The trekker (looks like someone I've seen before) gives the idea of the size..in my humble opinion, a crop by around an inch from the left border could have brought the trekker & the interesting formations a bit closer. Thanks for sharing with us pictures from this place..before this never heard, nor seen pictures from here.
Friendly Regards

See you in 2 week time. I am leaving for vacations and probably I will not have much time to critique. From 28 June and 14 July

You find yourself in yet another fascinating place, Ricardo, with amazing colour and weird and lovely rock formations. Both the colours and the forms are beautifully recorded here. regards kevin

Hi Ricardo,

There is also the head of Yéti on the left !!! These landscapes are really attractive and when one is on the spot that must be impressive taking into account the extent of this natural phenomenon. Still a very beautiful series on the subject, I like much. Thank you Ricardo.

With all my friendships and very good Sunday,

Oi Ricardo ,
