Photographer’s Note

In Cairo there are about four hundred mosques. Two hundred and fifty of them have minarets, others have domes. They make the view of Islamic Cairo from above quite interesting, but apart from them, satellite dishes are what stand out the most, popping out from every roof like white flies.

Hello stranger! Did you enjoy your long trip to Egypt?
You found a good POV for this one. Certainly there are domes and minarets all over. Interesting how the foreground is sharp and clear and then as we go further back things become lost in the haze of heat and pollution. Well done

Finalmente, já estava a pensar que não ia fazer o passeio ao Egipto!!!
O título: faltou referir a poluição!!!
O número de mesquitas: é curioso que quando fui a primeira vez a Jakarta também fiquei impressionado pelo número de mesquitas. Havia e há por todos os lados. Mas, nunca vi duas lado a lado! Quantas igrejas existem em Lisboa?
As parabólicas: talvez sejam muitas mas Lisboa não fica atrás, pelo menos no que diz respeito aos dormitórios!
A foto: gosto muito da vista panorâmica sobre o Cairo. O que impressiona mais é a cor geral da cidade. Cor do deserto e edifícios sem telhados.
Começáste bem a visita ao Egipto. Fico à espera de mais.

you left us with a very beautiful picture 5 weeks ago. and so you're back with some treasures I guess. How was your trip?
The haze and the earthly tones of colors are striking. It's only after a while that I saw the minarets. I think they are beautiful. Then I read the title!:D I like how you brought to our attention the satellite dishes! It really contrasts well with the scenery! Those white circles and those beige towers!:D
I can't wait to see what else you brought back from your trip!:D

hey, look who's back?... good to see you around ric:)... what i hate to see the most in the eastern mediterranean and middle eastern cities, especially it the historical ones are the water depots, sun light pannels, air conditioners and the sattelite dishes on top of almost every building... especially the air conditioners and s. dishes are unbearable indeed... but you ve managed to create a good compo with those ugly stuff along with the elegant minarets...

Olá Ricardo,

uma impressionante vista de Cairo. A imagem está repleta de elementos arquitetônicos, todos esses agrupados de forma interessante. Há dois pontos bem interessantes: um seria o efeito do haze sobre as camadas de prédios até o horizonte. O segundo a quantidade de antenas sobre os prédios. Outro detalhe peculiar são essas torres quebrando bem a linha das demais contruções. Belíssimo trabalho!

Ah, nice, brings back good memories. I stood there 16 years ago, not much has chanced, or it has to be all the dishes they put on their roofs. The smog is still there, but it seems less than i was there in September. Think after the heat of the summer it is much worse than we see here.
It's a classic view from the Citadel. A picture we all make because it's interesting and typical Cairo.

Bons olhos te vejam, amigo Ricardo das Arábias!
O padrão de castanhos é impressionante, ao mesmo tempo caótico e organizado. E aquela névoa arroxeada não deixa esquecer o que dá a mistura de calor seco e poluição. Gosto da expressão "moscas brancas", dá mesmo essa ideia.
Como foi "viajar independente" nesses países? Suponho que o fizeste, não? Quando fui ao Egipto fiquei com a sensação de que não seria assim tão simples, mas como sempre que vou "em rebanho de agência", fiquei com um gosto amargo de "saber a pouco".

Então estas férias como é que foram?
Pela amostra vamos ter umas belas séries desta tua ultima deslocação ao MO.
Nesta impressionam os minaretes e a quantidade incrivel de 'paranolicas' que cobrem os telhados do Cairo. Mas o que mais impressiona é mesmo esta nuvem de poluição que paira sobre a cidade e que deve tornar a tarefa de respirar em dias muito calor numa tarefa herculia.
Ouvi dizer que vens ao encontro no deserto é verdade?:)

This first photo is wonderful, great view over the roofs, full of those satellite dishes, which are a really nice detail, minarets and domes. I also like the fact that the view gets hazier the more to the background. Very well done!

Impressiona, urbanisticamente falando, a quantidade de torres e cúpulas presentes nessa visão. Um bocado de poluição, sempre associada a essa cidade, atrapalhou um pouco o lado "turístico" da paisagem mas, em contrapartida, imprimiu um "aura" ao estilo Indiana Jones. Muito boa, Ric.

O homem voltou!!! Então, que contas. Para além de minaretes, parabólicas e cúpulas, está claro! Temos de nos encontrar...
Não vai é ser proximamente, pois eu vou de férias já na sexta e só volto passadas duas semanas. Mas depois, não podemos deixar de nos encontrar. Gosto da tua foto. O ambiente é fantástico e a confusão também. Anda bem que não compressaste demasiado a perspectiva. Nota-se espaço na foto e eu gosto disso. Benvindo de novo!

A good start here with the presentation of the country's main city. And the abundance of mosques is obvious here from this POV. We can also see the countless satellite dish antennae, giving a graphical aspect to the scene. The pollution of the air is also quite visible too...!

A good sight to Cairo. Beautiful contrast between the enlightende foreground and the bakground dissimulated in pollution. The numbre of minarets is astonishing, the number of satelite dishes is more astonishing. Good work.

Depois de todas estas críticas, comentários e discussões, já não consigo acrescentar grande coisa original.
Esse céu horroso não me repugna nesta foto. Por um lado, dá maior realce à parte bonita da imagem. Por outro, começando a ver a foto por cima é curioso à medida que "descemos" desse smog a cidade vai aparecendo cada vez mais nítida, até ao primeiro plano.

Bem acho que isto é a maior concentração de parabólicas que eu já vi n minha vida.
É impressionante esta vista onde tudo tem a mesma cor...de deserto.
Não sei se me daria bem por essas bandas...acho que passado algum tempo...e não era preciso muito...já começava a bater mal...sempre a ver as mesmas cores por todo o lado.
Mas isso sou eu que sou muito conservadora e gosto mesmo é da minha velhinha Europa :-)
De qulquer forma a foto está muito boa.

I have a great souvenir of Cairo, its sounds, its streets, its backyards, its coffees... This pov is excellent and this view is really great. That's the BIG city, its colors, its shapes... Quite simple but so pertinent.

realmente há uma porção de minaretes por toda a parte. esta vista me lembra uma da cidade de el alto, na bolívia, por toda a parte havia centenas de torres de igrejas, impressionante. Aqui o que impressiona e entristece também é a poluição, esta vista seria ainda melhor sem essa névoa devastadora de pulmões. mas quem somos nós para criticar ? vá a São Paulo e terá o mesmo ou até pior.. Olhando para esta cidade tão diferente das nossas fico imaginando o que deve haver de cenários e motivos para fotos lá dentro. Por minha vontade estaria indo para lá ainda agora..

Hi Ricardo, another clean and sharp picture from you. I think it is leaning to the right but it could be a lens distortion result.
Nevertheless I can spot many satellite plates and this is weird because I can see no power cables!!!

Hi Ric. Haven't had time to be on TE much lately, so only just catching up with your Egypt posts. I think I like this one the best (it was the first one you posted so maybe it was your favourite too). It captures both the pollution of the air and the visual pollution of all the satellite dishes - if only we could contrast this to a photograph taken from this same place 50 years ago - then it would be apparent the damage that we are doing to our planet. I like how the city disappears into the smog (I use the word 'like' only in terms of the composition of the photograph of course!). Cheers . . . David
