Photographer’s Note

... shopping in the Khan el Khalili, the great souk of old Cairo - the centuries old gold souk, a warren of tiny passageways through an area as big as a city block, lined with small gold shops.
the lane known as the Tentmaker's Bazaar is meticulous, patterns ornate and strikingly colored. Small ones make great gifts and the large ones are good wall hangings.

It is always full of people - more Egyptians than tourists.

Here is something to remember in Egypt or any Arab country. It is considered very bad luck to give a compliment without saying "Ma sh 'Allah" - with the help of God. Leaving this expression out raises the spectre of the evil eye, taken very seriously in Egypt and much of the Arab world.

The future should be accompanied by "insha Allah" - God willing or see you tomorow

Rui this picture is quite something. It is very crowded with people and objects. The colors and perspective is very good. I like the fact you took it from a higher point. The amount of people here is huge, considering that the street is very narrow. Good work Rui.

You've certainly captured the atmosphere of the souk well here, Rui. It's not an easy task to capture scenes like this, but you managed an excellent POV. I would have however cropped the top to just above the blue sign (to remove most of the area that is blown out) and then cropped about half the shoes away on the right to balance the image to a 6 x 4 dimension. You have quite a shallow DOF due to the low light, so I would have preferred to see your focus on the man serving the drinks rather than on the shoes. Cheers . . . David

I just had to see your favorite 'daily life' photo. That waiter trying to squeeze through really makes the shot. Although I've read about 'the souk' and knew it was a market; I've never had real mental image of it. Your composition seems to me to be the perfect image, insha Allah
