[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Five days into our Southern Red Sea liveaboard safari and we still hadn't seen any big fish. Our guide promised me that we would almost certainly see some sharks under a platform at 55 meters depth on the north end of the famous Abu Hamra (Elphinstone) reef, a narrow sliver of coral rock that juts up hundreds of meters from the sea floor.

The Zodiac took us to our drop-off point and off I tumbled, my camera cocked and ready just in case. I was immediately greeted by a 3-meter white tip oceanic shark and I fired away at the minimum focusing distance: 1 meter.

Then the sharks' pals all came to check us out right at the surface, which gave us the opportunity to swim around with them without having to worry about air or bottom time.
