Through the mud-brick Photo

Photographer’s Note

After the old mosque I found myself lost inside the maze of high-walled alleyways and gloomy covered passages of Al Qasr. Medieval houses and covered streets are a feast for the photographer’s eye fond of light and shadow situations and I tried to make some experiences. People still live in these ruins, so I took the chance to capture every single local that passed by.

Dakhla comprises many villages with exotic architecture. Al Qasr is one of the villages, about 20km north of Mut, the capital of the oasis, and it's a must – an amazing Islamic settlement built upon Roman foundations that was indubitably Dakhla's medieval capital.

Very nice with the dark silhouette of the man in the gate.
This daily life-picture shows also the fantastic mud-brick architecture very well.

Olá Ricardo,
Uma espectacular silhueta, ainda mais com a bicicleta, ainda mais com aquele fundo. Esta cena "obriga" a disparar a máquina fotográfica.
Agora acho que no processamento podias ter cortado esta "barra" iluminada à direita. Mas desconfio que deixaste de propósito; admito que haja quem goste.

Your photograph is magnificently composed. The man walking his bicycle is framed by the doorway, all in silhouette, and placed perfectly in the frame. The texture and colors of the sun-parched stone wall serves as a very good backdrop.

I love it Ricardo....except for one thing. My eye keeps wandering to the lighter part of wall on the right. Personally I would crop that and some from the top to keep the proportions. Apart from that I love the perfectly exposed bricks through the arch and the silhouette is excellent. His stance with the tilted head and of course the bike combine to make a wonderful image. You clicked the button just at the right time for the action, positioning in the arch and before he stopped being a silhouette. Well done

Olá Ricardo,
esta es una toma muy difícil, con un gran contraste lumínico y zonas muy oscuras debido al contraluz.
Pero has sabido darle sentido a estas siluetas para crear una composición fuerte y con un gran impacto a la vista.
La exposición está muy bien gestionada, y el fondo de la imagen con los muros de piedra está perfectamente iluminado.
Buen trabajo, muy creativo y realizado con buena técnica.

You captured this passage really well with an excellent management of the light in the background. The contrast between the shadow and light is really strong and the person and his bicycle stand out wonderfully against the light background, which is also well placed on the left hand side of the photo. Silhueta fabulosa esta do homem e da bicicleta. Aproveitaste muito bem as condições de luz e a parede do fundo pra compor uma bonita imagem. Mas, penso que deixaste demasiado negro à volta, principalmente em cima e do lado direito. Creio que a parede à direita também não trás nada de especial à foto.

Like this frame within a frame & the sharp difference in exposure. Tried some shots in Jaisalmer, which also came out OK. Like the texture of the stone wall in the BG, makes a difference. Wonder about a crop by around an inch at the top & a couple of inches to the right?! Fine work my friend.

This image is having a wonderful effect created by the lights and shadows. The lights on the brick laden wall is brilliantly caught. The man with the cycle adds drama to the scene. Great shot TFS

Here is a picture I would have loved to have shot. You know I love silhouettes in action, and I wonder if you were patient to find this extraordinary scene..
So the program is OK for Lisbon, my wife anmd I are arriving on the 18th ( A Thursday )of September and the opening of my exhibition is due on the 22d at Jeronimos Cloister: I hope we'l bee seeing you. and perhaps some other Portuguese fellow photographers, whom I shall be so happy to meet.

Fabulosa! Nem sei que dizer, acho que nem é preciso. O enquadramento "duplo" está genial e o momento do disparo não podia ter sido melhor escolhido. Não vou ser a 27ª pessoa a "queixar-me" do pedaço de parede mais claro à direita. :-)

black and mellow brown image, the shadow is easy to read (that's the most difficult part in shadow images, getting a correct representation in action, avoiding the overlaps) and perfectly framed. what could we ask more?
