View Across the Nile River from Old Cataract Hotel

The famous old Sofitel Cataract hotel opened in 1899 and has been rated as one of of the best hotels in the world. It feathers Agatha Chirstie’s Death on the Nile and combines colonial grandeur with an Oriental motif. The Cataract's guest list includes Czar Nicolas II, Howard Carter, Sir Winston Churchill, Agatha Christie, the Duke of Connaught, the 3rd son of Queen Victoria, the Aga Khan III, King Farouk of Egypt, the Shah of Iran, Nahas Pacha, Khedive Abbas Helmi Soverein of Egypt, Mohamed V King of Morocco, Margaret Thatcher, Jimmy Carter, Helmut Kohl, Queen Noor of Jordan, Lady Diana, Princess Caroline of Monaco and Condoleezza Rice.

The Old Cataract Hotel sits on top a granite hill at the Nile river's edge in Aswan. It is named for the Nile’s First Cataract (rapids) at the traditional northern border of Nubia. Thomas Cook, the grand tour manager of Egypt had the hotel constructed, mostly for the tourists that his company was escorting down the Nile at the end of the 19th century. Today it remains one of the finest hotels in Egypt. See Workshop

Hello Betty
Your photo across the Nile from the Old Cataract Hotel really conveys the atmosphere of this magical place. I can feel the heat from the haze over the desert! Thank you for sharing, Marlene

hi betty,

i was reading your note and though it tells all about the hotel from where u took the picture, i am still wondering as to what i am seeing across the nile. is it part of some archealogical site?

as for the picture it takes me back to the old world.

Hi Betty,

Hi Betty,
What a striking contrast between the lush green banks of the famous river and the dusty desert ruins.
Very nice clear colors with a lovely bit of red from the foreground flowers and white boats that line the rocky shores of this famous river.
Regards, Tom

Hello Betty,

The lush vegetation in the foreground is an essential component of the composition, and clearly one that you realized as you shot the photograph. The brilliant red flowers in the trees and green branches of the palm trees contribute highlight to the parched landscape across the Nile. A very good note as usual.

Warm regards and have a good week,

Bulent

Hi Betty,

It's an image of a dream. I never thought I could be in a place like that. I hope I can visit it someday. It's different than any other landscape. Strange to see those trees against that dry land on the background...incredibly beautiful! The luminosity is so good that I think I can touch those leaves. Great job and thank you for sharing!

Carlos

Hi Betty,
Lovely shot! I like the colors, may be you could have added a bit more contrast in the sky. Your note is also very informative, it must have been a great stay for you :) Keep posting.
