The Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi Mosque is the most historic and most beautiful mosque in Alexandria. It was built primarily in 1775 over the tomb of a Spanish scholar and saint, Abu El Abbas El Mursi (1219-86), and stands on Mosque Square overlooking the eastern harbor.
Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi (whose full name is much longer) was born to a wealthy family in the Andalusia region of Spain in 1219. In the wake of increasing Christian control of Spain, he and his family left for Tunisia in 1242. He later went on to Alexandria, a popular destination of many Muslim scholars at the time.
Abu al-Abbas lived in Alexandria for 43 years as a scholar and teacher until his death in 1286. He was buried in a small building near the eastern harbor in Alexandria.
In 1307, El Sheikh Zein El Din Ibn El Qattan, one of the richest traders of Alexandria, visited the tomb. He funded a mausoleum and dome for the tomb, along with a small mosque. The tomb of Abu al-Abbas became a place of pilgrimage for many Muslims from Egypt and Morocco who passed through Alexandria on their way to and from Mecca.
The mosque was periodically restored over the centuries by rulers who built themselves tombs next to the saint. Most of the present structure dates from 1775, when the Algerian Sheikh Abu el Hassan El Maghreby built a much larger mosque on the site. It was fully renovated in 1863, and an annual festival was established to celebrate the birth of Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi.
The mosque was again beautified in 1943 under King Farouq I (r.1937-1952), who built the Midan el Masaged, or "Mosque Square." The square covers some 43,200 square meters and includes five other mosques centered around the Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi Mosque. The mosque was renovated in the Arabian style that was popular when the saint came to Alexandria in the 13th century, at a total cost of about 140,000 LE.

Ciao Caro Luciano,

A great view upwards to this mosque with good inclusion of the visitors on the foreground.
The picture shows well the splendid architecture and its many decorations.
The trees and the sky ensure diversity in the colours on this pic of the famous building.
Best regards, Paul

A good capture of this magnificent mosque. The architectural detail is very well rendered under a good light and I like the upwards point of view and the lively atmosphere.

I give a sincere critic, I have note same advice comparing to other critics.
I note there is excessive colours
The left minaret is touching the frame.
Not enough Image definition, it's possible to post close to 300 Ko
I suggest you for a similar case to take a wider position.

I am so glad that you made this trip: I was wondering what Alexandria may be like and I did not see decent photos yet. This mosque is fantastic. Architecture so elaborate and unique. Your reportage is very encouraging to visit this city.
I don't know if I may have missed the info somewhere but was it an independent trip?

In certi casi meglio lasciarlo naturale.
Ciao, buona domenica!

The photo is of a spectacular building, and the shot looks very striking in thumbnail form. However, I think there's far too much saturation in the lower area, and some strange darkening on the upper left part of the photo, including the left dome of the structure. I believe this photo would look much better with less processing. Also, maybe step back a little so you can include the people's feet! But thanks for the photo and information about this astounding mosque.

A beautiful architectural shot. I love the warm yellow light. And the clarity of focus is wonderful. And what a gorgeous structure, rivaling the Taj Mahal perhaps? A fine representation of this amazing Mosque. Regards,

Well saturated colours, so vivid, above all the green :). I like mosques and this one is very interesting. Great view from below on the magnificent elaborate entrance and high minaret. I forgot everything - I cannot read what is written :(.
Have a nice day

Good Morning Luciano,
The minute that I saw this, I realised what a difficult photgraphic task you had had. The building is so tall, but if you go too far back, you lose some of the definition but can accommodate the people; if you go closer, you lose the top of the structure and crop the many people, but the definition of the building is improved. Perhaps it is better to concentrate on one detailed area.
Also, the colours seem a little too saturated.
Oh, I am sorry, my friend, I seem hyper critical, but it is of this shot, not of you.
The building is beautiful, with some fine details and you have captured the busy atmosphere of the scene.
Have a good Sunday,

Ciao Luciano! It is a beautiful picture they gave in a dynamics with the details of Mosques! Excellent contrast and presentation, good colors and sharpness. Marvellous lighting a success I recognize also the interesting note! I like this point of place of capture
polpo56 (15136) 2010-08-29 2:33
ymrk (15085) 2010-08-29 3:13
WOW,certainly most spectecular architecture i've never seen in there!I've been admired the soft colors with light on the build!
By the way,I'm sorry on behalf of you :) Have you ever tried in Manual mode on your camera?
