Photographer's Note

With a length of 73.5 meters, a height of 20.22 meters, a maximum width of 14 meters (head height 5.20 m, width of face: 4,15 m, width mouth only: 2.32 m; ear height: 1,40 m; nose height: 1,70 m) and a weight of about 20,000 tonnes3, the Sphinx of Giza is a monumental sculpture carved in a natural promontory in the rock. His head is cut from a peak of hard gray limestone of Mokattam4 plate on which are built the three pyramids, a peak venerated in pre-pharaoniques5 time 6. It is located in front of the large quarry that supplied number of blocks to the pyramid.
