Another oldie, and why not? These are two boys I obviously met somewhere in Cairo in 1983.
"Obviously", because I found the photo in my computer among other pictures I scanned a few years ago. The original slide is safely stored in my wardrobe. That means I actually took this picture, but I have no memory of it and I don't know what part of Cairo this is. The street indicates a slum area, but the well dressed boys look more like middle class.
This was scanned from a Kodachrome slide.

I think their expression make me to stop at this photo. looks like they are brothers but in 2 different personality. One is joyful one is serious. Great composition.
the colors are so vivid and sharp and then the date 1983! wow!
Have nice WE

Man får nästan en känsla att man sett bilden förut, men var det inte damhandväskor dom pojkarna bar på? En lika rolig bild iallfall med dessa färgglada barn mot den slummiga bakgrunden.

This photo reminds me a page of a children fashion catalogue or magazine. Amazing street scene from peaceful Cairo.
They looks like a young but skilled actors. Well done.
Have a great weekend!

The boys are now 40 yers old, who they are today? What they do? How is organized their life? I would like to meet them today. Good reportage photo

Une trčs belle photo de ces deux garįons photographiés dans le cadre vertical.Rouge et bleu donnent une excellente touche ā cette réalisation.
Glint (5965) 2013-05-17 11:31
this is a perfectly charming image and bares comparison with the more famous photographer's. You had obviously engaged these little schoolboys and allowed their personalities to shine out.The show a sense of humour as well as a curiosity about the photographer and his camera. Nicely composed and a perfect dof.
Will spend more time browsing your gallery and generally catching up ver the next day or so.

Great couple, Gert.
I like the remarkable coat of the boy on the left and the contrast of the boys and the poor looking surrounding street.

Ciao e buona serata

You must be so curious about these two boys that you managed to capture so well on film. They certainly are incongruous with the location; the location being slum-like and the boys well dressed and carrying an expensive looking bag.
The boys themselves appear so different; one acting for the camera, the other deeply interested and engaging with you.
The scan has worked very well, nice f/g sharpness and good colours, indicative of the quality of the original.
Have a good w/e,

Another nice child portrait, this one in a different part of the African continent and in color, but no less full of life. The clothes on these kids crack me up - especially the boy in the red sweater, massive coat, and little briefcase! I can see why you're reminded of the linked photo given the poses, though I think there's a clear emotional difference in the shots.
It's really amazing to me the wealth of incredible shots you have stored away, Gert - and I love seeing more and more of these scans. You've truly had an amazing career.
ourania (21414) 2013-05-17 13:38
a very lovely and vivid spontaneous portrait the value of which increases with time, the gazes and expressions of the little boys surely become deeper and more heartfelt. I love their closeness amid this scenery of rubble, their expressions are intriguing and adorable. There's superb immediacy and wonderful colours that captivate the viewer. The similarities with Henri Cartier-Bresson's picture are touching. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely weekend,

Henri Cartier-Bresson, Alfred Stieglitz, Diane Arbus and Yousuf Karsh are among my favorite photographers. Indeed, this image has some similarity. Nice candid shot of those boys. Good lighting and dof with nice details. Well done, tfs.

Gert, it's funny how easy it is to get children to pose (and mug) for the camera. I particularly like the briefcase, which is far too big for him. Great shot.
tyro (16748) 2013-05-18 16:42
Firstly, yes, your link did work! But do not try to compare yourself with the revolutionary photographer Cartier-Bresson - he not only owned a Leica camera but also (I discovered after a little research) had a torrid affair with Caresse Crosby, the lady who invented the brassiere! But, yes, I see your point - this picture is indeed reminiscent of the picture to which you added a link.
But these boys do not appear to be the "scruffy urchins" in Bresson's picture - these young fellows are smartly dressed, despite the state of the street, and, with the leather bag, are probably going to or heading home from their school. Not only do they seem like friends but they also appear quite happy to have their photograph taken.
A well taken close shot which shows that you must have had some quite close interaction with these two boys. And an excellent scan too from good old Kodachrome!

That's a wonderful "scanned" capture.A very very interesting atmosphere and so nice expression on these so cute children.
Very nice job

You're capturing well this two kids by a good composition and excellent scanning, so it's impressive to see kids with Randoseru(a firm-sided backpack) in back alley. It looks like that they are weaing a good clothes, and yhe countenance is gentle and innocent.
agjika (4319) 2013-05-19 10:42
Great shot of these kids being themselves. I find the clothing very interesting. I also like his shoes! My shoes alwasy ended up like that because of my kicking stones on the way to the schools and back!
Thanks for sharing

Hello dear Gert,
Those oldies are really worth to be published as a book;the documenary of a decade.
Those kids in Kairo are poorbut their faces radiates such a happiness.
TFS and best regards
williewhistler (10859) 2013-05-19 13:39
the quality of Kodakchrome with the bright saturated colours lives on with this well converted image.
A very well captured image that shows very well the environment in which the children lived,a picture with a story.
My best regards Les.

I went through a number of photos in your gallery, but kept coming back to this one. First off, this looks fantastic for having been taken in '83...the quality would appear much more recent. What a great moment you captured, young children can show genuine emotion and you've done a wonderful job putting that to print. Fun loving and carefree is certainly conveyed here. The depth of field is spot on, keeping the focus and attention on these two and allowing for their personalities to come through. Great daily life image on the streets. Thanks for sharing the moment. Have a nice week ahead.
All the best,
emka (67259) 2013-05-19 23:53
Hi Gert, of course yes for the oldies, we love them. Such a nice photo. The blue of the boy cloth jumps in the eyes. The boy on the left has warm clothes, it is strange. The garbage on the street behind them, so typical for Kairo streets, probably still the same in slum areas. Excellent composition. How wonderful photographer you were (and still you are).
Warm regrads from Warsaw

Meanwhile are these two boys become big men, maybe also father of young boys.
You has a very good scanner, this image is very well made.
Technical a very nice picture, excellent detailed foreground.
A very nice picture and lovely composition.
Very well done, TFS.

adidas5nb (3945) 2013-05-23 8:20
absolutely priceless.love to see your pics which gives a perspective of the world 3 decades n before.stunning capture with the kids and the depth of this alley.wonder 30 years after ,where these kids are now and what r they doing!
Urs (14082) 2013-05-23 20:38
Innocent kids in the rubble of a back alley in Egypt, that was 1983 but 30 years later, not much has changed. Still thee are kids like the on in your shot hanging out in the back alleys. The so called spring revolution has not change much, just others are pocketing. Fine reportage photo shot.
Vientiane has not changed either. The hospitals still are not really hygienic, but is it much better in upcountry Thailand, no it is similar. You were lucky to survive your shot in Vientiane. Today I would recommend go for the shot to Ubon, that is more save.
wolf38 (29666) 2013-05-25 9:06
Hello Gert. FRIENDS. The two look very interested in the camera. My eyes caught on the clothes of the big red bag. Nice that you've found this photo yet, scanned and published.

Hi dear Gert
What an amazing wealth of photos you have in both your archives and your gallery. In that respect, your gallery reminds me a little of Mesut's, his photos are wonderful and like yours echo beautifully through time. 1983, wow, these little boys are grown men now (hopefully) and with children of their own. A superbly candid shot, you capture their innocence and circumstances superbly. The quality of the image belies its age. It is exquisite.
Well done, a great shot in every respect

Another good old one! I like their different expressions and the details, such as the uniform and the old school bag. A very good portrait, with a good blurred background.

I sometimes wonderful what these kids are doing now. They must be in their 30 to 40 years old now. Their children would be this age or older. Great photo of old and really good scan quality, a great sense of nostalgic in this photo. Very cute kids and really wonderful expression and playful faces.
abmdsudi (35282) 2013-06-24 21:29
Kids being kids...
Lovely curious happy looking faces which always raise great excitement. I love the contradiction of the stunning colours, sharp in focus with nice glimpse of background they are in. Their expressions are priceless, innocence of childhood. A well taken almost timeless! Congrats.
Miguel82 (16568) 2013-06-25 10:36
Successful composition Gert,
Your comment is true, they are well dressed and look smart, even you're from a slum it's a good thing to wear nice clothes
I like the contrast behind them
jmdias (49653) 2013-08-07 17:19
nowadays they are adults and probably facing a not so good experience in these hard times in their country.
excellent image, the quality after so much years is perfect. most of my old photos lost its quality but I never tried to get another version using the films..
KristinsCamera (2371) 2013-08-15 19:38
awww ... here is another one for me to both like and worry about, given what is happening over there.
this is how i want to think of cairo, not what i am seeing on bbc & al jezeera. this is what i want for egyptians, not the present violence they are going through.
they must be approaching their 40s, i guess? i wonder which side they are on. looking at the two of them, i like to think one is pro-morsi and one is not -- and i like to think they are both alive and still the best of friends.
thanks for this one, gert ~
