This is a "new oldie", a digital photo from early 2006. I spent a couple of weeks that winter on the Cape Verde islands, a former Portuguese colony and now an independent republic in the Atlantic ocean, outside the coast of West Africa. Geologically the islands are - I believe - an extension of the Canary Isands.
On the northwestern island of Santo Antão I hired a taxi for the day to go from Porto Novo on the eastern side, across the island to the west coast. Now and then I asked the driver to stop so I could get out to take photos. When we reached this place, at the highest point of the island, I didn't have to ask. The driver just stopped and told me that "tourists usually take photos here".
Two views in other directions will be added as workshops.

fantastic location and captured in wonderful way. The pebbled road leads to eye towards the main subject and creates nice perpective. Very nice bright foreground which draws attention straight away. I like the idea of foggy background which makes the rest of the photo even more outstanding.
Very well done! Thanks for sharing your lovely work!

Delightful perspective in the road leading to the mountain peak. The sharp green in the foreground is wonderful and contrasts very nicely with the rest of the elements. Great work.

I don't know if I will have the nerve to drive on this road, it looks like it is on top of the world with a long drop to the bottom. Nice capture with good lighting and dof with nice details. You did a wonderful job in scanning this image. Well done, tfs.

a very effective presentation of this unusual and fascinating landscape. Your point of view and composition have enhanced the perspective and easily bring us into the frame inviting us to look around, explore and follow the narrow road around the curve. I like very much the asymmetry of the views on other side of the road, the coexistence of a weak sunshine with a mysterious mist and the brightness of the green leaves that contrast all the other colours and are somewhat reassuring in this strange scenery. The views included in the workshop are very intriguing too. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,

Hello dear Gert,
This time something different.
Interesting scenery from Cape Verde with good pov.
Interesting to see that the way is not asphaltcovered but cobblestone !
TFS and best regards

That must be a pretty terrifying bend to come around, Gert - hopefully no one else driving in the opposite direction when you do, because it doesn't look like you'd have much room to maneuver! Getting the greenery in the FG was a good move, adding a nice burst of color, and the long view into the canyon is incredible. Perhaps the crop at the top is a bit tight, but the view and the angle are both fantastic. Thanks!

It could be very strange postcard. Without some landmarks, attractive colors or panoramic landscapes.
Anyway, this is interesting place, good presentation of the nature in Cape Verde.
Have a good day!

Hi Gert, Something unusual in your gallery. Where are those tourists taking photo? you could show at least this driver. I am joking. No wonder they stop there. But on such a narrow road, near precipy, sharp curve I would be scared, brrr.
wolf38 (30276) 2013-01-16 2:26
Hello Gert. Change of location. Cape Verde is a nice contrast to our winter. The small road high up in the mountains is very idyllic. The fog indicates good weather. Somehow reminds me of the photo to the hills of Madeira. The photo pleases me very well.

Your position for take these picture was also a little bit dangerous, but I know a photographer takes sometimes a little bit risk for the best picture.
The way leads us very nice around the rock.
Nice depth and perspective, also lovely sharpness.
Excellent presentation, pleasant colors too.
Very well done, TFS.
Have a nice day,

In this well composed shot, you give us a genuinely exotic scene. More than that, however, now I know you have set foot on every square meter of the earth. A "new oldie," from 2006, however, would be among my "newbies." The information is most appreciated, because I recently accepted an offer to give lectures on a repositioning cruise, Crystal 3331) that visits Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Will you post additional shots from the Canary Islands?
lousat (72181) 2013-01-16 11:51
Hi Gert, spectacular view from these incredibles islands,a neverending road to the sky, whit the clouds on the left to create a strange and magic atmosphere,i like it! Have a nice evening and thanks,Luciano

unusual place, very far from Europe. Good 3 shots and presentation. An interesting your remembrance and photos from archive.
Have a nice day.
kasianowak (4844) 2013-01-17 2:01
Lovely postcard! I like the composition with the vegetation at the bottom and cloudy backgrund.
Royaldevon (26449) 2013-01-17 11:01
I don't remember having seen a shot from this location before but, on investigating further, I find there have been quite a number of posts.
Your shot uses the guide lines well, taking us to a strongly positioned pinnacle but still allowing time for our knees to wobble at the ominous chasm to the left. Not a shot for those with vertigo!
The inclusion of the mist adds to the sense of height and mystery.
My warm regards,
annjackman (17751) 2013-01-18 0:17
I find this a very lovely and atmospheric picture. The quiet road snaking around the rock and towards the low cloud is fascinating. Well done for including the plants in the FG. The composition works very well for me and shows a place that I haven't seen before.
Best wishes, Ann
macjake (52014) 2013-01-18 1:48
thats a funny story, I guess the taxi driver knew what to do :)
Like Eleu said, not sure if i have the nerve to drive on this road :) looks very steep over that edge, but thats why it makes for an interesting photo.
We don't get to see many roads similar to this!
cool views, very unique.
enjoy your day
mkamionka (29187) 2013-01-18 4:21
amazing place, spectacular view. No wonder tourists like to stop there but I am kind of surprised because I don't remember ever seeing this place before and this is something I would definitely remember. The person building the road was very creative.
Great composition with the pointy leaves making a charming foreground. The fog behind also adds a nice touch and a bit of a mystical atmosphere.
Excellent work, very interesting!
willperrett (5876) 2013-01-18 6:46
This is an interesting scenic drive! I'm glad you stopped to take this photograph: the steep valley, partly shrouded in mist and the sharp rocky outcrop make for a very arresting landscape shot.
adores (34348) 2013-01-18 18:23
You have been there?
Hope you enjoyed your stay. I haven't been there so far, but I would like to.
I can see why tourists usually stop here for photos - the road seems a little dangerous but the place is really beautiful and the landscape is really worth a stop. I like these plants in foreground and the clouds really add to the atmosphere.
abmdsudi (39482) 2013-01-20 7:36
I just imagine how hard it was to construct the road on this rugged terrain and altitude. Great views all around but looking down the steep cliff would be a nightmare and I know that some people suffer from vertigo. There's loads of depth there with your stunning vp along with excellent lead in lines and a startling place afforded by the vibrant green plants. Indeed a great feel of height and space, and the layout really works, sharp clean edges of the rock formation combine to lead the eye deeper and deeper into the valley below giving a sense of proportion. Beautifully exposed in natural colouring and the effect of the mist makes it even nicer. Wonderful shot, it is certainly worth being up there and I can share your feel. Congrats
Angshu (54703) 2013-01-23 1:16
I had to recheck whether indeed this was you post. Not a soul in sight! :-)
Curious shape of the rock which raises its head above the road & the steep precipice of the gorge on the other side. Thanks for showing us the 2 other POVs...together helps us understand the 360 view
fabianoleite (9371) 2013-01-26 7:40
What an incredible road, and you showed it from a well chosen angle, showing well the cliff and an apparent danger, vewry thrilling indeed. Good inclusion of plants in the foreground, excellent work, congratulations!
Kielia (22913) 2013-01-27 7:23
it was a wise decision to listen to the taxi driver - they are the experts!
This image shows a spectacular place and the bold perspective makes it very attractive! My compliments!

Thanks for sharing
zanzi (13550) 2013-02-11 12:10
The place seems beautiful and... vertiginous.
You'd better not miss a curve.
leo61 (0) 2013-02-24 10:32
I was driving this road a few times by bus and Aluguer and loved this passage, but felt vertigo.
Great shotof this cobblestone road on this fantastic island.
kato (11630) 2013-03-08 20:53
You're capturing well this place by a good angle and excellent toe/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the winding road gone up on the top of the mountain and huge rock. It is a natural spectacle to me including the canyon of the steep cliff which is visible to the left. And, the green plant in foreground draws out a good impact in this image.
maloutim (9627) 2013-03-16 12:19
I am glad I can enjoy that view while sitting safely in my chair in front of the computer. My God, I would suffer vertigo if I was riding down that road :-)
However, the walls seem to be strong !
What a lovely composition with the peak on the right and the elegant, green plant on the left.
Thanks for sharing.
jusninasirun (17156) 2013-03-25 3:13
I like the element of adventure with this narrow road and tall cliff in a dreamy backdrop. The pandanus plant in the foreground creates balance in this finely composed view.
Thanks and have a nice day.

En intressant gata i ett intressant område. Denna väg leder direkt in i dimman. Väldigt spännande!
Mycket fint och lite mystisk. Bilden gör nyfiken hur det ser ut bakom berget.
