Maga is a small city located east of Maroua, in the extreme north of Cameroon few kilometres from the Chad border, south of D’jamena.

I found that place one of the highlight of my trip in the Northern Cameroon with a mix of many different cultures and of great landscapes. Here, an artificial lake was created in 1979 to give birth to the SEMERY project, an attempt to develop the rice culture so that local people can improve their standard of living.

Maga itself is a crossroad for Mousgoum and Choa people.

Mousgoum people are pride farmers and fishermen who have a large influence over the area together with the Kotoko people. 4 kilometers from here, one can discover beautiful clay “Sare” which used to be the traditional dome-shaped houses for a family.

Choa people who are arab speaking nomads who periodically enter the Cameroon territory with their animals during the dry season so they can survive. Women form these tribes seem to have extremely beautiful traditional red dresses and to wear a profusion of earrings, collars, etc…

I only spent one day sailing along the shore but it gave me a strong motivation to come back for several days and meet these different people. It’s not totally clear if this would be safe enough to stay overnight but I’ll try to collect as much information as possible before doing so.

Another curiosity is to meet the hippos who found a great ecosystem to proper. It’s really spectacular to observe between 30 and 40 hippos at sunset. The show is really impressive especially because they may be aggressive if we come to close with boats.

Here is one of the latest shot I made during that great afternoon when leaving the area with hippos. These men are local Mousgoum fishermen who came back to Maga with his fishing nets.

This is a variant from this posting.

Salut Steven,

Patrick

Steven,

Great shot, has an "overexposed" feel but it shows the detail in the fishermen, boat and shadows.

...tim

Hi Steven
Great late afternoon photo.
Excelent Colours, relexes and exposure (to balance the agaisnt light).
Well done

Hi.
I like this shot. Reflection on motionless water.. like a miror...impressive

TFS

With my best regards

Steven, that is a wonderful calm floatating moment. The refelctions are perfect and complete. If it wouldn't be for that little strip on the horizon I wouldn't be able to discern between sky and water. What gesture is that of the man in the front? Was that a NO for pictures?
Any shots from hippos?
TFS, Peter

wonderful picture, Steven
timing, composition and reflection are very good
I like almost silhouette kind of these fishermen, but details still visible

Hi Steven,

In a sense, it is such a nicely balanced picture. But on the other hand it's not at all; the harsh silouettes of the two guys in their boat opposed to the softness of the rest of the picture. But strangely enough, that harsh-soft interaction is what is so well balanced in the picture.
Guess that doesn't make sense... Had the picture on one of the tabs of my internet explorer for half the day. Could not figure out what it was that captivated me. Well, the vague description above is all I have to offer ;-).

Thanks for sharing!! Dennis

Beautiful silhouettes. The color helps to make this picture almost to look like a painting. Regards, Yvonne

Hi Steven
Well captured moment and light. The boat and the two fisherman in contrast nice in the yellow scene.
greetings Albrecht

Very good overall tone in this one, Steven!
Was that ochre product of the sky colours
reflected in the sea, or was it a bit misty
as well?
I also like the contrast and shadow tone
management.
Cheers,
Robi

Bonjour Steven
