Color and photography and the effects of the Harmattan. Most people say it sucks for photography, but, as I've said before, it's not a studio shot so you have to use what you have. I kind of like the muted effect the dusty atmosphere has on the sun, very surreal looking to me, especially looking back and remembering my time there.

This shot was taken in Waza National Park in northern Cameroon. A great little out of the way place with excellent opportunities for landscape shots if you have patience. Plus, the added benefit of having almost no tourists around and the park to yourself.

Let me know what you think
John

Hi John, excellent one, minimalistic with the lonely tree in the foreground, the other ones far away lost in the mist as the sun.
excellent shot.
thansk, ciao

Also haze and mist can provide good subjects, as in this case.
A pale sun and a lonely tree, and a great result
Regards Stefano

John,
Very nice shot - a place that's bad for photography? Probably a workman and tools thing!

Regards
Colin

Hello John,
A really good composition, very minimalistic, so few colours that if it wasn't for the sun I might have thought it was in b&w.
Regards,
Gert

Oh it's simply fantastic!
The thumbnail simply doesn't do it justice - I bet this image would be fantastic to look at at full size, screen filled, to appreciate completely the wonderful effect of the one tree with the rest in hazy bg.
I agree it looks surreal. Beautiful!

Hi John!
These days I was reading about this phenomen Harmattan at Cape Verde`s Island in November. When it happens there are no flights and no ferries work....
Together with your well explaing note this is a great shot.My first thought was,you did a lot of postprocessing here.
Good composition with the sun oposite of this lonely tree in the foreground and the row of trees at the horizon.
Regards,Leo

hello John,
superb photo, I've always enjoyed minimalism in photography. I like a lot how you have composed it with the strong line of the trees crossing the imaginary line between the sun and the bigger tree on the right. simply beautiful.

with kind regards,
Kristine

Hi John,
The lonely tree and the ball of the sun are perectly placed on opposite corners of the image to give a good balance. I love the hazy atmosphere, large expanse of sky and the almost monochromatic colouring. Sometimes less is more and I think it works well here.

Wanda

Hi John, talk about turning adversity into a strength. This is an awesome shot with your Harmattan effect (and thankyou for teaching me something new today). The composition is very good with the minimalist approach on the ground, yet capturing the dust in the air on that low profile. The inclusion of the sun, blocked by dust too, adds a lot to this scene. Very nicely done.

Thanks, John

Hi John,
So you ask us what we think....well i think it's a great shot. Very minimalistic with also a minimum on colors, but that makes it only more interesting. The lonely tree, the sun, it's fits perfectly for the overal composition. A picture that i like, something i would like to make myself...well done.
Regards, Henk

Hi John,

You visited some nice places I see. I like this. More than the earlier postings on your travel. A nice open space, left and right well balanced by the sun and the lonely tree. Very nice.
Maybe I might have taken that one tree out of the mist with some unsharp masking, but this is wonderful work. Must have been a great trip.

Greetings, Dennis

compo,light... everything works! a nice place Waza. i saw it in... 1981, it's true .. no tourist!:)

John,
an extremely moody landscape contrasting between your portraits. The atmosphere of this shot reminds me a lot of the winter impressions that we get here in the San Joaquin Valley. The only thing that differs are the shape of these so typically african trees. Perfect, flawless composition and I agree with you that we have to work with what we get and the results can be suprising and stunning as you did it here.
Peter
