A girl attending a course for women in reading and writing. The class takes place outside, in the shade of mango trees, and the course is also an opportunity to learn about health, nourishment etc.
This photo was taken 28 years ago in the town of Banfora, southwestern Burkina Faso. I have scanned this from an Ilford FP4 b&w negative.
In a workshop you can see another picture of the study group.

Wonderful life moment, the composition makes the 'knowledge source', the book, dominate and the expression on her face is perfect - deeply studying indeed. It really works well in monochrome

I like her look of concentration and I also like that I can see a drawing in the ladies book next to her. wonderful study in black and white and great use of depth of field to isolate your subject.

the book, the holding hand/arm, and the pencil - that threesome set send the message of this image...

Interesting intent with the portrait, i would try and different frame to bring the strongest poise with the two subjects..otherwise in monochrome this looks just perfect Gert..

a nice B&W portrait of this girl, very concentrated on her book.
studies can be a way to get better life conditions, in rural coutries.

what treasures you have stored away! and I am delighted that you have shared this one with us. Perfectly composed with good sharpness and a nice bokeh. But its sum is greater than its parts. It tells a story...a nevr ending story? of the struggle for education, especialy by women. This looks wonderful in b & w. I will save this in my theme "favourites 2010".

I realise that you have opened another box of photos you keep in your wardrobe. Once again you present fantastic pictures. I love the concentrated expression on the face of the girl in the foreground. The blurred background is also excellent. Just a minor thing is that the picture could have even better if you a moved a little bit to the left and the face of the girl behind the girl in the foreground has been totally hidden. However, I understand that in situtions like this you have to be fast with your camera.Your picture is close to perfect anyway. TFS a nice Sunday!

This is a very moving picture. I found it so inspirational. Shows the dedication of the woman, hoping it will made others appreciate the life they've given.
Great documentary BW photo. Thank you so much for sharing it with us .. once again

That's really strong Gert, the moment of learning.
Very well captured, in your line, congratulations...

Hi Gert. A lovely shot of these women trying to improve their lives. It is a sad thing that so many are denied basic education while others send their dogs to canine beauty salons. Nice moment of intense study. regards. Klaudio.

It's great to think that a photo taken 28 years ago is now on the "world wide web" for everyone to enjoy.
You captured the moment perfectly. I like how the open book, shows us the subject material and creates a background for the girl's thoughtful stare.
Disabled_A (0) 2010-03-28 12:11
whenever I see such photos I always ask myself a more or less rhetoric question: how far you were from the "object" of your photo and if you were noticed taking photos?
I like the composition and the DOF: the accent is placed on the woman thoughtfully reading a book but at the same time we can see clearly enough what's going on in the BG :)
PS. very well seen at a Mac monitor ;-)
papera (14320) 2010-03-28 13:31
what an astonishing portrait - her focused expression, the way she holds her book and pencil, the light of the sun in the background hinting at the presence of trees...
the FP4 brings out the highs in a brilliant way, even in the scanned version of the photo I can still see that :)
patdeph (35748) 2010-03-28 14:45
one more time, this is a very interesting photo, where the intense concentration of the women is the main element!I like the B&W ,and this is very well framed!Nice to see these adult trying to learn!Superb!
macondo (19806) 2010-03-29 4:43
A very good daily life shot, a great study of studying. The original b/w looks good despite the predictable noise in the background - and I like the shallow DOF. Great timing to capture the open pages of the book behind her! She seems very intent on improving her life through education despite the modest materials and humble setting of this 'classroom'. A terrific record of your visit to this remote country - I think it was still called Upper Volta in those days, no?
tusharkmandal (3173) 2010-04-07 8:52
Thanks for Sharing this image. So much to learn from it for a novice like me. Great portrait in black and white with perfect natural expressions. Even after so many years its still a great image passing almost 3 decades.
kato (11630) 2013-03-25 5:30
You're capturing well this scene by a good angle and excellent B/W tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the spectacle which young women have a textbook and pencil outdoors and is studying eagerly. Her eyes are visible to the expression which is going to absorb knowledge avariciously. It is also interesting in traditional costume. So, how to escape from poverty or ignorance has only education. It is the thought to which he admires the actibity of UNESCO or NGO members which are working.
ourania (51103) 2014-08-14 5:49
I like both pictures very much, this is a lovely natural portrait and the workshop scene is touching. I like how you isolated these scenes from the teaching process, a close and a more thorough look to the people who work for their education and the improvement of their living conditions. The scenes are neat and peaceful but the work being done there must be very challenging. I wish people had many, proper opportunities, the girl's concentrated look says how they need and deserve them. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely day,
Periko (6398) 2016-07-30 21:35
A b&w picture is always special, above all when the subject is people.
This girl seemed to be very interested in her lesson.
The depth of field is good as well the details of her face.

Quel scan excellent, le choix du N/B, le format, la personne net et l'autre flou, très belle réalisation
