Among these thick and gorgeous palmtrees, human tragedies were perpetrated for centuries. This beach is located on the Atlantic Ocean and was the dead end of the sadly well-known "Route des Esclaves" (Slaves'Road), started from the town of Ouidah, in south Benin. The slave trade "flourished" from 17th to 19th century and during this time it is estimated that nearly 1,000,000 of individuals were boarded onto ships from the beach at Ouidah and were transported across the Atlantic.
Originally, Ouidah (once Gléwé) was a small village in the small Xwéda kingdom which supported itself through agriculture, hunting and fishing in the coastal lagoons. In 1580 the Portuguese were the first Europeans who reached the town and after that, grew around the slave trade.
When in the late 1800s the slave trade declined, the inhabitants of Ouidah began to focus its commercial efforts on much less lucrative palm oil export.
At the same time, began the repatriation of many of the descendants of slaves sent to the Americas. Most of these were third-generation enslaved individuals living in Brazil, and as they returned to Benin (and particularly to Ouidah) they brought many of their customs and traditions. To this day there are many examples of Afro-Brazilian architecture in Ouidah originating from that period.
Ouidah is also one of the most remarkable center of the Voodoo religion in the world.

Hi Attila,
Such a warm and closed atmosphere, how great it looks without the sky!
The woman with her colorful attire adds a lot, and the DOF makes us feel really amongst the bungh of palms. Very well shot photo. Congrats,
Deniz

Hallo Attila!
An unusual and a most beautiful photo with an a bit mystic atmosphere. The person is a real eyecatcher here. the build up is not to surpass...
Greetings from sunny and warm Germany!
Frank

Marie

Olá Attila, once again, you show us a beautiful scene of a country I didn't even knew about. Incredible effect of the forest of palmtrees as a background and very nice contrast with the colorful woman in foreground. The f/8 gave you a very pleasant depth, with details of the sight to a very far distance. Marvellous image!
I hope you are well,
Ricardo

Alberto

Hi Attila,
Among the thousands of photographers, yours are perhaps truest to the spirit of TE, knowing the world through photographs. Benin is a largely undiscovered country for many tourists. A well taken image complemented by a very informative note.

Ciao Attila!!

Ciao, complimenti!!!

Hello Attila, I find this composition interesting with this woman who seems to look towards its passing, c'est very graphic these alignments of palm tree and your image is well balanced, the landscape must be appreciably the same one at the time of slave it there with that a few centuries, this multitude of overlapping tree trunk one in another immediately inserts to me in l`image, moreover the colors are very attracting, sincerely .............................Hello Attila, je trouve cette composition intéressante avec cette femme qui semble regarder vers son passer, c'est trčs graphique ces alignements de palmier et ton image est bien équilibrée, le paysage doit ętre sensiblement le męme au temps de l’esclavagiste il y ŕ de cela quelques sičcles, cette multitude de tronc d’arbre imbriqué les uns dans les autres me fait immédiatement entrer dans l‘image, en outre les couleurs sont trčs attirante, bien amicalement

Excellent picture with fantastic colours and tones, Attila !

Hi Attila,
Again a good work with the exposure to manage to blur a bit the background and to stand out with great detail the woman in foreground.
The composition takes a mysterious and chaotic touch as the labyrinth that the palms form, with a good graphical effect and many verticality.
Made well, my friend.

Hi Attila,
A remarkable and unique photo, well complemented by your informative note. I like the vertical format here and the depth obtained with the trees, with the fellow in the foreground nicely off centre and his colourful garb nicely contrasting with the prevailing beige tones. You managed the light well here to prevent a bleaching effect. Very fine work.
John

Hello Attila,
Excellent your note, sad that here the portuguese were not related to this story for the most remarkable things but right on the opposite side due the horrible thing the slavery was.
About your photo, it's really all about verticals, palm trees, this lady on foreground.
I also like the depth of this photo as we may look through the palm trees from the first one till the last ones and find out at their end what seems to be a small village built on their middle.
A great photo with an excellent note.
Cheers.
Paulo

Hi Attila,

I think that only a high dose talent and inspiration could get a photo so attractive with that bright and hazy light. You managed to use the colourful clothes of the woman to enhance her very nicely against that pattern of palm trunks. It's also pleasant to notice that she is not alone there and the forest is used by the fishermen to take care of their nets.

I like also Gustaw's WS, but what he gained in visual impact, he also lost in details and mood.

The note is also interesting and informative History wise. I thought that the Portuguese had already lost a bit of its interest on that part of Africa in 1580, as they knew that coast for about 100 years already and they were much more interested in the Arabian Sea, India, Sri Lanka and what is now Indonesia and Malaysia (Malaca) in the late 16th century.

Regards, José.

Hi Attila. Just back from Vitenam i discover images with a totally different feeling in your library. This vertical compostion in the sand and palmtrees is excellent. I love the pastel colours, very good work.

The composition is great, Atilla. The difference in sizes of this woman against the palm trees is intriguing. The other element that is quite surprising is the movement that you captured in the trees giving that blurred effect of the leaves. Great shot!

Szia Attila!
OK, a tele összenyomja a teret, a Szaharából jön a por, arrafelé a nők ilyen ruhában járnak - mindennek van egyszerű magyarázata.
Laci

This another of yours fascinating exotic captures. The composition is gorgeous. The bright color of the woman's dress and the fading colors of the palms are a great result.
I wish you a nice weekend!

Great photo Attila. Love this land of huge palm trees. Almost ethereal looking. Composition and color are good enough, not great, but good enough to create a really atmospheric "tight crop" landscape. Great note and good simple framing to complimaen the photo also. Will be in Benin in February, any must sees that you know of from a photographers perspective?

Great work.

Already a ton of great critiques, so not much more to say.

You provided an excellent note, so thank you, and this photo is really good with the palm tree trunks going off into the distance.
