| We stopped in Abomey, Benin, on a one week school trip from Niamey, Niger that I was leading. We were studying the slave trade and its effects on the Kingdom of Abomey. Our guide wanted to know if we wanted to see a Voodoo temple nearby, we said sure, and off down a bumpy red-dirt road we went. When we got to the temple, this woman had just come to give thanks to the god for answering her wishes by sacrficing a chicken. The process was quick: slit its throat over the idol andwhile the blood spurts down its sides, add a bit of palm oil too. When the chicken was bled, it was thrown out the window and landed at the feet of one of the girl students. They are watched and listened to the guide explain what was happening, but they were certainly pale and subdued afterwards. What happened to the chicken? While we were talking to one one the priests, the other took it out back, plucked it, and had it roasting over a fire by the time we left! It was a very interesting experience for us all! |
