Photographer’s Note

This picture was taken during a trek in the desert in the South of Algeria. The aim of the trek was Tassili N'Ajjer: A plateau of sandy rock North of Djanet oase and climbing up to 1700 to 1800 meters high. At the East you have Lybia and the Acacus, a similar plateau. Ghad is about 100 km away to the East. The Ajjers are crossed by sparse Touareg caravans trading between Niger and Lybia. Tassili N'ajjer is also an important archeological site. One finds many rock paintings and engravings there. They date back to 8000 BC. They represent wild game like elephants, girafe or even hypopotamus and livestock. They testify of time when Sahara was much greener.
The wadi presented with this acacia is somewhere below the plateau, some 700 meters lower. It is 2 days walk (40 to 50 km but after what detours ?) away West-South-West of Djanet. I often have problem locating the picture as we were following a Touareg guide and had never to care for our track.

La résistance des acacias est étonnante.
Belle image. Le noir et blanc nous met la confusion entre le sable et la neige.

Bonjour Philippe,
un peu de soleil et de chaleur dans les galeries clamant les beautés de l'hiver, cela réchauffe, je me suis surpris à faire pareil.
J'apprécie vraiment ce cadrage, j'aime un peu peu moins le traitement en n&b, mais bon, question de goût.

Sans la présence du nom où a été prise cette photographie, l'on aurait pu croire que ce paysage se trouvait dans un lieu où la neige avait recouvert le sol.
Félicitations pour cette composition. Le choix du noir et blanc est très original et fait ressortir à merveille les subtilités des lieux.

C'est rare des photos (modernes) de desert et j'ai regardé la destination à deux fois pensant que tu étais à la neige :-)) Bien sur ceci à partir de l'imagette.
le filtre crée un arbre fantastique, j'aime bien aisi que le cadrage pour cette position de bord de piste de l'arbre solitaire.

Hi Philippe - striking desert composition, the BW gives it a timeless quality, I hope to go there someday, the bureacracy seems so complicated, I'm going to Yemen instead next week, a colour version of this would also be interesting.

Bonjour Philippe, this is very nice. It's great you converted it to B&W, I guess the lioght was very harsh too, but this way, you can't even decide wheter there's sand or snow. i like that.

Hi Philippe - Somehow the B&W gives me the illusion of a snowcovered landscape - I like the composition giving us the tracks as a connection to ciliviatiation - thanks for taking us here.

Une image bien composée et bien contrastée. Le noir et blanc lui va plutôt bien, même si, j'aurai plutôt tendance à marier désert et couleurs mais ce n'est qu'un à priori. Amicalement.

Magnifique cette image, bien sur le n&b n'est pas du gout de tout le monde notement pour le paysage mais je dois dire que c'est quand meme exceptionnel comme ambiance. Le premier plan si clair est vraiment top ici
