Here is my last picture, at least for the time being, from my journey to Algeria in 1975.
This is from the city of Constantine, the third largest in the country, situated in the northeast approximately 80 km from the Mediterranean sea.
Constantine is built on a large plateau high above the surroundings and with a deep gorge cutting through the centre. Among major cities it remains one of the most spectacular I have seen.
This photo was taken during Eid al-Fitr, the major Muslim holiday marking the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting. Most people were free from work and thousands of families, all dressed in their best clothes, were going for walks through the city. From what I can imagine (my memories of 38 years ago are not crystal clear) I must have taken this from one of the bridges crossing the Rhumel Gorge.
I have scanned this from a Kodachrome slide. A larger version can be seen here.

Very interesting and attractive picture, full of eye-catching details, with excellent overall photo quality! I specially enjoyed the vertical format, chosen pov and composition!
Impressive high quality of the scan too! It doesn't even look like an old photograph!
TFS - congrats,

A colourful urbanscape seen from high view point as it creates a visual feast to the eyes, a real treat of vibrant colors simply beautiful with those mass of crowd within the green lungs forming a fantastic diagonal line. They are as usual a great focal boosting live and strengthen the shot and the compo too works well for the backdrop detail with lots of interest. The brilliant contrasting colours makes lot of diff to this shot. this is an excellent work and u have done well to convey the local atmosphere.

I did not think that Algeria may be so green, excellent photo with vertical format, great composition,
saxo042 (35922) 2013-11-02 10:08
En välkomponerad bild med en övre del i blåvitt och en tydlig diagonal med en massa folk och däremellan grönt i många nyanser.

strolling down the gorge and scrolling down the gorge:) The large format makes viewing a very rewarding and delightful experience. I love the comprehensive and comfortable point of view from a bridge, the composition extends in the frame in a fascinating way. Wherever there are crowds I prefer to observe from afar so I find this sight very interesting. I like the flowing movement along the diagonal path and how the people mingle with the shadows. The sense of depth is magnificent, the textures and colours of the foliage very delightful. The colours have a most attractive richness and vividness. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,

Hi Gert, Great composition. I always like such strong comparison between huge and small. Amazing POV and colour contrasts. The shadow of the people in the gorge is clearly shown on the road. Another wonderful presentation to share with us. Thank very much.

very interesting indeed.
so you say this is one of the more spectacular cities in the country? well, now you've peaked my curiosity!
when I scroll down the image, it seems as if it doesn't stop, it just keeps on going.
excellent placement of the buildings at the top, and that gorge is pretty cool too, we don't see a scene like this very often at all.
It works well even without the buildings at top, with the trees at the top and bottom.
Good-Bye to Algeria?

Hello dear Gert,
Pity that you are ending up your oldies from Algier !Those are real gems, as things has changed there quite drastically.
Again a perfect captur showing the heavy "human traffic" of the pre-feast days.
TFS and have a nice weekend

Excellent view up over the green trees to bright dominant buildings on the top of the hill. The crowd adds a lot of life to the scene. I like the excellent vertical arrangement. Well done.

Ciao e buona domenica

I heard of that gorge dividing the city in two.
I didn't know that the gorge was so densely forested.
It looks like an interesting place to escape the city bustle. At least on a day other than a holiday.
This gorge, a bit like a city park, makes me think at Luxembourg City where a wide gap surrounds the old town and is now an urban park.
Beautiful contrast between the green trees, the white buildings and the blue sky.
Best regards, Paul

this photo has a little bit different proportions from the classic composition, but I think it makes it more interesting. The biggest part of the photo has been taken by the greenery, but it has been broken into two parts by the path with colorful crowd. The top of the image nicely crowned by the white building.
Good colors and light.
Thanks for sharing

UlfE (14603) 2013-11-03 9:50

Impressive old picture with spectacular framing and interesting history. TFS such kind of pictures!
rigoletto (33780) 2013-11-04 2:12
nice to have a large screen where you don't have to scroll down the gorge :)
a genuine composition with a stunning amount of trees and people walking down the white city. so, the lazy people stayed up there near the buildings while the energetic majority had a stroll down the gorge.
ps: thanks for the 100th pts and the accompanying fav :)

From the number of people strolling this must be a popular trail. Good pov showing not only the trail but the city beyond. Good lighting and nice details, you did a wonderful job scanning. Well done, tfs.

namaste Gert, another nice pictures from your oldies. Great to see the layer of colours here. Love the gorge at bottom with those green trees at middle and the white strips of buildings at top. Magnificent view, nice executed. Superb shot. Tfs.
jemaflor (77570) 2013-11-05 11:41
Good pov on people, trees and town, good idea and presentation with a vertical format, light is well managed.
worldcitizen (6147) 2013-11-06 13:53
All the greenery in this photo really pulled me in. I like the way that small road emerges from the trees on the left side, and opens to reveal all of the people walking around. The top third is expertly filled with buildings, to create a lovely composition. We've all taken a trip to the Algeria of the past with your recent photos. :-)
kato (11152) 2013-11-10 23:48
You're captiring well this place by a good angle and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see winding narrow street among deep greenery and crowded people gathering its street the end of Ramadan. And, It's beautiful for a group of the facade with white outer wall in back.
tatadalou (4621) 2013-11-14 19:16
Stunning view ! It looks really vertiginous ! Your choice of POV with the city in the really upper part strenghthens this impression of height. Thanks for making us discover this gorgeous place.
Miguel82 (17325) 2013-11-16 6:17
Dear Gert, many people walking outside that day, a flea market with vendors and customers, many trees, a green area, beautiful perspective, good dof, an authentic scene from Constantine, Algerie, all the best, have a good saturday
s_lush (16130) 2013-11-17 11:58
Your picture has considerable aesthetic and historic values, showing how this famous place looked 38 years ago. Despite the conversion from a slide, colors, quality, especially detail contrast, are perfect here. Excellent job!
mcmtanyel (8359) 2013-11-25 7:48
You have preserved your slides very well. This is very interesting scenery, an urban area perched on top a gorgeous gorge (sorry, couldn't resist). I like your composition, the way the eye expects the line of people to meet the line of buildings of to the left outside the frame.
mkamionka (28462) 2013-11-26 6:41
another perfectly preserved archival picture. Very attractive composition with the crowd of people strolling through the diagonal here path. The abundant green vegetation contrasts well with the buildings on top -almost like the Central Park in NYC.
Very well done!
