I will not remain forever in Algeria in 1975. Perhaps one or two more pictures and then I will move through the years to some other country and another time.
This photo is from the city of Annaba in the northeastern corner of Algeria, near the Tunisian border. This was my first glimpse of Algeria after arriving by train from Tunis. Unfortunately I have very vague memories of this city and my diary from that journey doesn't add much. I noted that the city looked extremely French, that I ended up in a far too expensive hotel, that the strictly regulated currency was ridiculously overrated and that the dinner I had was almost as expensive as in Sweden.
I arrived in the evening and the next day I just spent a couple of hours of sightseeing in the centre before proceeding by bus. During those hours I took two (yes, two) photos. This is one of them, so it's a rarity. It is scanned from a Kodachrome slide.

I wonder if the little boy is having good time...is he bored or quite opposite - intrigued to listen to all these stories? Nice scene and interesting content, that's what I like the most about your photos. Good POV, composition and natural colors.
Thanks for sharing and have a nice evening

Ciao e buona serata

this is an interesting and amusing study on human character and relationships -if the little boy could hear this comment he might scream:) He is constrained to it with his giant grandfather and his pensive friends while he would surely prefer to do other things. I like very much the curious things occuring in a simple and natural daily life scene you accidentally ran into many years ago in Annaba. The little boy has grown up and may accompany another little boy when out to meet his friends. I also like the symmetry of the two gentlemen at the sides, the rich and moody colours, the interest all the details have acquired with the passage of time. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,

well, lots to say...
first of all its interesting to hear that even your diary didn't add much to this place - perhaps you were just too disappointed with the town to even write anything worth while :)
secondly, i know I say it all the time, but i wonder about this group of people today...are the 3 men all passed away, probably, and the boy is now just over 40 years old - so what happened to him, how did his life progress?
thirdly, I like the way that most European countries and South American countries place the name of the street onto the building itself. Look in the bg, the blue square next to the red round do not enter sign.
It may not be a big thing, but its 100% cultural.
believe me Gert, there is NOWHERE in Canada where you can find that. We don't place our street names onto buildings at all. I always chuckle and smile when I'm in Europe or recently in Chile when I see that.
lots to see, lots to keep me interested.
still waiting to see a photo from you that you took on Nov 13 1975....thats my birthday :)
you seem to get closer and closer haha

Jag noterade just att du passerat en poängmässig millstolpe, grattis! Jag hade sparat dagens sista poäng från mig till denna trevliga bild. Men vem är det som ligger utslagen på gräsmattan?
abmdsudi (52963) 2013-10-30 23:54
People watching can be so fun as shown of these old pals meeting in the street in their typical fashion discussing the important issues full of possible tales. It kind of sums the place up for me. I'm not sure if there's too much going on in the image-
there's lots to see I guess. The characters, expressions and body languages is quite entertaining and the picture also shows the relaxed atmosphere complemented by wonderful background details, vivid colours add a richness to the scene. Interestingly they are so close to each other yet each one seems to be in their own little world no one talking or are they ignoring each other oblivious to all around them. Everything in this image adds to the story but the man second from left has especially caught my attention for some reason and the popping red somehow anchors lending the strong impact. Lovely shot with interest and colour encompassing almost a time gone by. Very enjoyable human interest shot, Congrats and tfs

A true exotic scene. They sure have an original way to relax (especially the man from the grass):P.
Have a nice day.

Excellent detail group photo with very nice colors, perfect light, very good clarity. Superb low angle viewpoint. The well-chosen tight crop eliminates all unwanted distractions. Well done.

Hi gert. Only two photos, liker two stars- an indication of the lack of the WOW factor. Yet this image is priceless in its inclusion of the "old" child (he has the serious look of the elders). I do like the impression that they are all oblivious of your presence and instead are deep in some reverie or inner dialogue-at least the one wearing glasses. I wonder what wonders the other photo holds.Regards. Klaudio.
mesutilgim (94502) 2013-10-31 3:50
Hello dear Gert,
One of your "best"s within your oldies. The young boy within those three elder men adds a unique taste to your compo.
TFS and best regards
eldancer1 (36343) 2013-10-31 5:37
When I was a young boy I also listen to conversation among the elders either to gain wisdom or to learn what life is all about. Nice capture of the daily life of people with good lighting and nice details. Good that you retain the wonderful colors. Well done, tfs.
mjw364 (842) 2013-10-31 9:27
I like this composition - the boy sandwiched between the two men is the main point of interest and they are positioned well in the frame on a third.
Fis2 (95983) 2013-10-31 9:55
Next curious reportage photo from your archive.
Excellent colors and sharpness.
I like this daily life shot.
Very good scan.
williewhistler (16372) 2013-10-31 12:34
I do enjoy the contrast between not only the elderly gentlemen and young boy sitting on the bench but also the semi naked man on the grass behind them.
It`s another view on how life was on the street 40 years ago,I wonder how things have changed..
So much to enjoy and ponder upon,a joy to view.
adidas5nb (5743) 2013-10-31 20:04
the bg and the flavor does look very very french.love you pov and the frame .great shot.also like the half seen man lying in the bg.

Impressive shot from your past collection.Very nice perspective and good framing along with nice colors .Sharpness and colors are fantastic. Very well done.TFS.
annjackman (21813) 2013-11-01 3:43
I wonder what relationship the boy has to one or more of the men. He probably can learn a lot from his elders. His red T-shirt helps to make the boy stand out from the group. I notice that there is a very relaxed man on the grass! A great scan and composition - it is so good to see life a few decades ago in the places that you visited.
Kind Regards, Ann
rychem (34507) 2013-11-01 8:48
Great scene from the past, I see this picture, I think is this bench still there, and who sits on it, excellent shot
PaulVDV (28215) 2013-11-01 13:17
I remember that the few people I knew who visited Algeria many years ago told me it was an expensive country because of the artificially kept high exchange rate of the Algerian dinar.
But you are lucky that you've visited the country in a time that it was possible and safe.
I'm a little surprised by the young man lying in the grass with bare chest. Perhaps he's still a boy ... but it's not something that I ever saw in an Arab country.
Looking at the clothes of the older gentlemen I think they were dressed rather European. The man at the right is wearing a jeans.
Can it be that life of the habitants of the cities in the north of Algeria looked very European (French) in that time ? More than it was the case then in Morocco or in Tunisia ? Maybe my memories of the latter two countries have faded too much ...
Best regards, Paul

Hope you "stay" in Algeria for a long time sharing this historical great shots
This seems quite new with good sharpness and colors ( a bit too oorange hands and feet ?), but a good composition where the boy seems quite out of the chat, bored and tires or both
Greeetngs, congrats and good weekend
willperrett (10339) 2013-11-01 15:02
Good old Kodachrome! I remember the vibrant colours: wasn't it a rather warm-toned emulsion? The colours here are certainly still bright: I'm assuming you haven't tweaked them in Photoshop! A nice informal group. I wonder how much has changed since then...

namaste Gert. You have an excellent range of great photos from the film era. Another nice one. Like the relaxed sitting postures of these 4. Nice colour tone and the depth is superb. Very well done. Tfs.

Ciao Gert, lovely multiple portrait, nice daily life scene, wonderful colors and splendid light, very well done, my friend, have a good Sunday, ciao Silvio
imageme (1790) 2013-11-04 19:58
Hi Gert, Well captured with their different expressions on their faces. I think they were all thinking different things in their heads. I noticed a topless man lying on the side too. The old man with slippers on must feel very comfortable than that of the other two. The little boy had nice shoes on, probably he had just finished school. This presentation is very casual but very real in life. Thank very much sharing
Graal (102570) 2013-11-04 23:31
nice photo from your archive. Portraits I like. Two generations here. Fine natural pose of men. Superb quality of scan. I like it.
Have a nice day.
emka (95073) 2013-11-06 3:02
Hi Gert, only two photos! But in that time even I made one or two photos from the place. Nice scene and the photo full of interesting details. For instance, the men do not wear socks but the boy does. poor boy, he would probably prefer to play with his friends than to sit with the old people. But I am more interested in this man visible under the arm of the man on the left. It is a funny view. Was he drunk/ Or ill?
Very interesting note. It is a good thing to have diary, better than to count on the memory (as I do).
delpeoples (57278) 2013-11-06 3:38
Hallo dear Gert
What a sweet, thought-provoking historical document. The idea that this little boy is now a man, possibly a father - or maybe even a grandfather - boggles my mind. It's a wonderful scene in that the little boy is spending time with his grandfather and elderly friends. I wonder if he looks back on those times with fond memories. A wonderful shot, I love it.

this is the kind of photography I like a lot.
It´s always great to get back memories from our past trips(even if sometimes we have not only the good memories of them).
This one has its own, unique mood.Three older men and a boy(maybe giving him lessons of life?:)
NorthernLight (2383) 2013-11-07 10:24
en fin ögonblicksbild. Man kan läsa i deras ansikten på vilket humör de är. Om de känner varandra? Vad funderar de nu?
adores (45027) 2013-11-10 7:26
It's interesting to compare this one to the others you have posted before. The buildings look really European and the people also dress more like European, but they keep the turban, connecting them to their culture and religion.A very good daily scene with the four sitting on the same bench while the older boy lays on the grass, reading the newspaper. The little one must be around the same age as I!
siudzi (34141) 2013-11-11 4:07
What a fantastic scene here from your files! Really unique and original capture of this group of people observed and taken in a very natural way. They seemed to be no disturbed and continued they chat even being photographed. Excellent composition and execution. Like it a lot!
Miguel82 (27674) 2013-11-14 11:18
A remarkable capture and authentic urban scene from Algeria Gert, high quality, fine colors and pov, the people are peacefully sitting and talking in that park, all the best, have a nice evening
kato (11630) 2013-12-22 21:56
You're capturing well this scene by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the spectacle in which three elderly men and on young boy are sitting on bench and spending the peaceful time. It's also impressive in traditional hood on their head. They and s man reading the newspaper at left side look loke to relax at one corner of this city.
aliabazari (16154) 2014-10-02 22:26
A good shot of the men and everyday life. These pictures are priceless. Composition and depth of the well performed. Thanks for sharing

Hello Gert! Fine men. Three musqueteers and d'Artagnan! Fine colours. Superb brightness. Good composition. Splendid effect. Well done!
Periko (4886) 2015-08-20 21:30
Those three men have a world of information for the kid, but he surely is not interested, he would like having fun with other kids. A great picture
ikeharel (69765) 2016-04-14 3:00
yet another great take from more than 4 decades ago.
The young boy must be in his 40th now, and the 3 elderly men... well over 100.
Fine preserved scanned picture, excellent daily-life subject from old times.
