Another scanned Kodachromes slide from Algeria in 1975. The technical quality is quite low, I won't deny that, but I rather like these two elderly gentlemen gently greeting each other. Since 38 years have passed I think I could safely say that they are no longer among us. The two younger men in the background, having fun at me, are hopefully still around.
This is from Laghouat, a large oasis on the northern fringe of the Sahara. Coming from Algiers you reach Laghouat quite soon after crossing the Atlas mountains.
In several medium-sized Algerian towns in those days there used to be three hotels: an expensive government-run luxury (well...) hotel, one decent middle-class hotel and one for those with very little money to spare, usually absolutely disgusting. The government hotels were usually too expensive for me, and in Laghouat the middle-class place was full. So I had to spend my night trying to get used to the smell of the cheap place, hoping I wouldn't have lice or flees crawling or jumping all over me. Eventually I was all right and could proceed further south early next day.

Salam my friend peace be upon you!
What a marvelous candid and it's about communication of two colourful characters- probably long lost friends in such expressive conversation, hand gesture and the interaction. A well seen and well caught them unawre, the moment timed to perfection with excellent dof, and the play of light and shadows. A wonderful study in body language too. Exquisite candid and such wonderful poses. Great stuff!! Congrats
Tx for sharing

Hello dear Gert,
Back to the "oldie"s ! This capture 1975 is still an evergreen after so many years; with it's pov and nice warm colors.
TFS and best regards

whilst the image quality may not be the best the subjects more than make up for any deficiencies,it really is a special moment as the two elderly men greet each other.
A fine double portrait, full of charm and interest,a most pleasurable photograph.
Kind regards Les.

You know I love the grain and saturation of transparency film. I hope Gunnar has shared with you that I also love the differences we find around the world -- differences that often reveal that we are all the same! This exotic scene could be two old men anywhere on the planet, no?
Thank you for sharing this wonderful image from your archives!

Kia ora Gert (Greetings from New Zealand)
A great shot from the past. It's always great to see photos scanned from slides or negative films - I've posted a few of these myself and will post more. Images such as these say a lot - much more than words. Look forward to seeing others. Cheers, Neil

Hi Gert. You sound like an adventurous and intrepid traveler. Time for a book, don't you think, memoirs from those days of yore with these precious photos. i have bought a few "antique' books of similar ilk of travels by Brits and Yanks to Albania.Love the moment. I see the young ones are amused by your interest. i hope these two friends are together in another place. Regards. Klaudio.

You have given us a fine note about these people and this place and an excellent photograph by way of illustration. I was particularly intrigued about the three classes of hotels commonly found all those years ago in Algerian towns and also very pleased to learn that you suffered no after effects from having spent the night in a less than salubrious one.
Again we see a scan of a very fine Kodachrome slide: it might be a bit grainier than those others we are used to seeing from you but the content is delightful - those two elderly gentlemen greeting each other with handshake and smiles while younger mischievous men look on from behind. Your close view is very well composed, the colours and light are excellent and the sharpness and details are very fine too.

Lovely scene. It looks like the friendship has no borders or nationality, age or any other obstacle... Well taken, have a great day ahead.

The man on the right part of background looks like a bodyguard of these old men. He is ready for action, dear friend! ))
Another excellent document from Algerian town daily life.
very interesting report from the past.

Excellent street snapshot, so typical not only for North Africa but also for may Asian countries.
Excellently optimized crop allowing both men to remain a great focal point. Vertical composition works very well here. Well done.
Wish you a very nice weekend.

namaste Gert, excellent moment presented here. Sharpness and clarity of this photo are outstanding. Great tonal quality. Excellent composition with these two in front with a not so busy street at back. Great shot. Tfs.

a lovely and heart warming picture, a simple daily life scene that makes you feel good. I wonder whether you discovered this detail as a nice little story in a larger photo and decided to isolate it in an independent image. I like very much the casual way the two old friends are greeting and smiling to each other, like they' ve probably been doing for many decades. I also like how they are surrounded by younger men and how their robes almost fill the frame. Maybe this photo is a document (and the only one at that) of a great friendship. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely weekend,

Ciao e buon fine settimana

Gert, wonderful capture of a moment - you might think about categorizing this as a Decisive Moment as well. Looks like a chance meeting in the street of old friends. The scan, as you say, is not of the highest quality, but the photo is just outstanding.
kasianowak (3474) 2013-10-18 12:53
Another interesting well-timed and composed street photo. Never mind the quality of the scan - however it makes me wonder if you ever tried converting this to black and white? I may be completely wrong but it may enhance this image.
As always - thank you for sharing, these photos are priceless.
Periko (1389) 2013-10-18 23:18
The quality is maybe not high, as you say, but the picture is a work of art.
CLODO (26462) 2013-10-19 4:35
As you said, the quality is poor due to the scan, the sharpness is not the one we now get with the numeric erea, but the scene is worth seeing.
have a nice WE
bayno (18334) 2013-10-19 5:09
beautiful moment of warmth, beautiful smiles, excellent warm light and vivid colors, a jump back in time, although I think the situation has not changed much in those places...

good portrait of two old men. Interesting document from seventies in Algeria. Good title and caught moment. Well scan.
Have a nice evening.

You know I like your old scans from bygone times tremendously. They give us a glimpse of an other, slower way of life. Looking at this candid shot, it seems that customs haven't changed that very much after all. A scene like this can be observed even today in many parts of the orient.
hejdå och trevlig helg

Curious photo from your archive.
I like frame and colors.

carlo62 (19455) 2013-10-20 3:28
nikkitta (8981) 2013-10-22 15:22
Another great quick shot of the old friends, I believe that not only the young at the back saw you, also the one on the right is watching you
It doesn't matter the quality but the subject, and it was taken in the right moment
A photo to be proud of
Funny , interesting note
Congrats and thanks for sharing this photos
Miguel82 (14500) 2013-10-24 6:24
Dear Gert, you captured that nice exchange between these old guys, all the characters in your picture are smilling and talking peacefully, it was another time in Algeria, good resolution and colors, a brillant picture, all the best, good afternoon
eldancer1 (20824) 2013-10-24 7:48
Friendship among people is basis for world peace, unfortunately not everybody subscribe to that so war erupts. Why can't we just get along? You did a wonderful scanning this old photo. It retained the wonderful colors of the Kodachrome, I did used a lot of those films. Very well done, tfs.
adores (30831) 2013-10-25 16:54
Good idea to post it! The clothes of the younger ones really take us to those days but these two old men really catch our eye. The traditional clothes are perfect and they look really happy to see each other. A good moment!
maloutim (9473) 2013-10-25 17:17
Lovely old feeling about this old shot ! I don't suppose one would see this fashion of robes nowadays in Algerian streets. The men look like pilgrims greeting each other as they meet.
I like the rough walking stick !
You are right hoping the young men are still around, after what happened over there in the 1990's.
Thanks for sharing this piece of Algerian history in pictures.
jemaflor (74078) 2013-10-26 1:25
A scenne well framed with this friendly attitude between these two old men, good light, pity that the sharpness is not perfect.
agjika (4309) 2013-10-27 2:01
What a shot, almost theatrical. These two old friends are like in a Star War movie or something like that!
I like the way in which they stand tall in the frame and the walking stick is superbly placed.
I hope you had a good time in Greece.
batalay (33431) 2013-10-30 7:42
As you mention, the technical quality of the photo is not that good, you've captured a timeless moment between two old friends. Their expressions and body language are timeless. In my youth when I engaged more art work, I frequently created ink drawings, precisely focusing on such expressions. I didn't always succeed, but there is a record at Room 9 and Room 10.
Vasa (16612) 2013-11-02 3:37
"Bonjour monsiuer Duval" the title of a French toil of Courbet. I like it. Regards Gert!
