I remain in Algeria in 1975. Here's another scan of a Kodachrome slide from that journey. You can also see a slightly larger version.
Regarding the title: "Into the groove" was a song recorded by Madonna in 1985. These men are walking into the date palm grove of Ghardaïa, a large oasis town approximately 500 km straight south of Algiers.
I have previously posted several pictures from Ghardaïa, among them this, this, and this.

I like very much how the upper part of the vertical frame is overwhelmed by the palm trees, they look as if trying to sqeeze out of the frame:) There's a stark contrast with the lower part, the gritty, dry textures and the colours of the desert. The two men look weary and their slow pace in captivating. We are enticed to follow them into the shade and mystery of the grove which, compared to the outside view, looks very inviting. There's excellent depth and details and your effective colour management reinforces the description and the story. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,

Fantastic composition and very dramatic colors, Gert! You have accomplished the task, often difficult, of conveying the very large scale of the grove.

Nice composition well framed, Perfect with these people and interesting colors contrast.

Ciao e buona serata

Hi Gert. As a boy in the early 60s in Paris, I remember the pleasure of eating my first dates from the French colonies, including Algeria. They were fresh, meaty and very tasty. And here I see these beautifully verdant trees with young dates. A lovely contrast all that green and orange. Regards. Klaudio.

What a strong contrast between the lush green of the palm trees on top and the reddish soil and wall!
The red earth has clearly left its mark on the other wall that was once white.
The picture has an excellent sharpness.
Best regards, Paul

We can just imagine the scale proportion here, this beautiful grove of the oasis village makes for an impressive image and your framing accentuates their size !!! Fabullous interplay of colour contrast is so well observed on your part; the deep fresh green against red sand and touch of white within the setting. This shot reflects another realistic feel of real rural life and the gentle relaxed scene experienced first hand. It's a nicely done work, brilliant effect, tones and details. Congrats and tfs
Credit to your quality pp works and the wide image.

Simple scene from that exotic world. I like the natural colors and the everyday scene of life. Well spotted.

nice to be back to see your photos again :-) This is catching attention with the great contrast of the greenery and the orange toned road. Two silhouettes of pedestrians have been placed in the whole composition in smart and elegant way. The whole image has nice quiet mood. Pretty colors too.
Thanks for sharing

You're capturing well this place by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see yje color contrast of the ground with red soil and the grove with rich greenery. I t looks like an oasis in the desert. And, two local people who are wrapped around the head a turban draw out a good impact in this image.
subhendu_bagchi (21110) 2013-10-24 6:25
namaste Gert, nice to see the dense greeneries here at the top with contrasting red soil in land (which is very common in India also, in the district of Purulia, West Bengal, and some parts of Andhra Pradesh). Great image quality. Another great scan work. Nicely composed shot. Tfs.

Mycket fina färger och mönster i palmernas "lövverk". Man anar till och med lite höstfärger här också. Männen nedanför är snyggt placerade mot den släta muren och med den röda delen av muren som balans.

Gert, I love the depth of the colors in this shot, particularly the browns below. Unusual crop, with the trees taking up about 3/4 of the frame, but it's forced by the geometry, and in addition it really works well, giving us a great sense of how large the palms really are.
Finally, I'm amazed by the quality of the scans you manage to get. Most of the results I got out of my Nikon scanner were not nearly this good (but I was scanning about 5000 slides and didn't really have the time to treat each one individually). Really well done. Thanks.

a mini series of most attractive and informative photographs, how interesting it is to be able to view life as it was 40 or so years ago,I wonder how things may or may not have changed since then.
The original slide is of the highest quality, beautifully exposed with perfect clarity and natural colours.
My best regards Les.

Old pictures tell a story. more so when the subject is such that it will always extract a reaction. I am not really interested if the scene has changed much since the 70's - This is a story of continuity and movement in 'human life' in its pursuit of sustenance and growth.
The two human figures are between three broad colour slabs - reddish brown of mother earth, the light blue of the Wall - a human construction and the top layer of greenery - of nourishment and growth.
The slow walk of the two men (identities not required - we see the back) give a fine momentum to the photograph.
emka (64182) 2013-10-25 22:58
Hi Gert, With this big picture, I see first palm, palm, and then after scrolling - surprise - the people going on this red desert road. excellent composition and fine colour contrast. There was something written on the wall but now faded. I wonder how it looks like after almost forty years, I suppose it hasn't changed much.
rbassin (13381) 2013-10-26 12:53
les contrastes entre la terre ocre et les palmiers sont superbes.
Bonne insertion des deux personnages, une scène agréable.

This is superb eye-catching scene due to an interesting composition and perfectly managed saturation. Like it a lot! Excellent street life scene from your files:) Many thanks for sharing with us.

I just love the colour contrasts, probably because I didn't imagine seeing such greens in a desert region. The photograph is, in itself, well composed with regard to thirds and a definite lead across the frame. I appreciate the contrasts of textures and am so glad you were able to include some locals, who add a sense of place by their costumes and also, give a sense of scale. Those date trees are huge!
Have a lovely day,

Another good old one of this place! I like the composition with the two people calmly walking and the color of the earth is great and eye catching. I'm sure you had a great time discovering this town.
