I took this photo from a minaret 37 years and 11 months ago, in late September 1975.
This is from El Oued, a small Algerian town on the edge of the Sahara desert, not far from the Tunisian border, roughly 550 km southeast of Algiers.
El Oued is surrounded by huge sand dunes, and at least in 1975 sand was everywhere even in town, drifting along the streets and to some extent into my hotel room. Water was scarce and had a taste of salt.
The minaret of the town mosque was a good observation post. Looking straight down I could watch the market, lookng further away I could see the surroundings, like in this photo which I scanned and uploaded here several years ago.
Like that picture this one is scanned from a Kodachrome slide, the only difference is that this is shown at 1500 pixels.

Good August evening, Gert,
It looks like a movie scene too ;) Perhaps historical movie from the deep past. Outstanding document photo, impressive quality for 1975. A salt water is more better than water with a Hepatitis C in Afghanistan, for example.

namaste Gert, an interesting activities from the ship market... Like your high POV. Great details obtained from the slide. Nice scan work. The colours are natural. Good contrast with the colour of ground, probably sand. An excellent one from the time when I was just creeping :)
Have a nice time.

this is a captivating daily life picture and the title you chose for it is superb. I absolutely love this view of the market, the sense of vividness, the movement, the intensity of each little scene contained in the frame. It's like an illustration of a Nasreddin story, the association is irresistible. The sense of depth and the clarity are wonderful, I particularly like the textures and the details on the clothes. Although we can't see many faces, there's immense interest in the postures and contact of the people. The rich warm tones and the luminous whites are marvellous. The view in your other photo is also fairytale-like. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a good night,

hello Gert, What was the height of the minaret? Minarets, towers, hills are always good points to view and shots.. With your photos we can learn how old some Trekkers are - many of them are younger (not me, unfortunately). Splendid view , with the sheep, goats and men in turbans. The colour of the soil contrast well with the gowns. As always, stunning scan job.

mkamionka (27051) 2013-08-30 5:19
very interesting daily life scene. I like the repeated motif of the traditionally clothed people and sheep of course as well. The ground seems so uniformly red which adds so much interest here. Great POV from above. The presence of the shadows adds a nice touch.
Very well done, thanks for sharing,

Hello Gert - Thanks for attaching the other shot with this one, together they give a really good overview of your location and both are impressive shots. Here you have super detail and a lifestyle that has probably not changed much in centuries. Fabulous scan! Warm regards Rosemary

It must be an amazing sight being in the oasis town in the middle of the desert and a great opportunity to absorb the local atmosphere at the lively animal market seen from the first class viewing point. Brilliant capture you saw it just at the right time when the gorgeous side lighting which brings out the textures and colours in a very warm way even the white robes there have emphasized the colours and enhancing the strength and vividness of the subject. The photo as a whole is pleasant and well taken it does have the punch to grab attention it deserves while they are concentrating on what they are doing unaware of your lens. Wonderful shot from remote land & nice effect, and tkhs for the additional photo showing us the overall scene of the oasis town, Congrats.

A best example of a scene being spectacular through it's simplity. Great work, love it.
Enjoy a nice weekend.
eldancer1 (20728) 2013-08-30 7:40
It is a nice and time-honored tradition to close a transaction with a handshake just like those two people on the left. And it show confidence among human beings. Awesome capture of this market even if this was taken long time ago. Good pov and dof with nice details. I used to favor Kodachrome slides also. Well done, tfs.
saxo042 (33878) 2013-08-30 8:28
fabbs99 (11030) 2013-08-30 11:31
Lovely shot of the sheep market from the 70s.Fantastic sharpness and brightness. The light, the colors, the neatness, the depth are exceptional. TFS.
williewhistler (9819) 2013-08-30 12:00
your unfettered view has allowed you to capture a fascinating market scene, the transactions taking place as well as variety of animals on view are so very well recorded.
A timeless scene that has lost none of it`s qualities in the conversion from slide.
Kind regards Les.
macjake (45574) 2013-08-30 13:15
you won't believe this but its true...i actually ALMOST posted an exact same type of photo today.
I'll post it during the weekend or on Monday, its from Prague.
if you were told you could look at this photo for only 2 seconds, and then were asked if there are more sheep or more people...I still don't know what i'd say is the correct answer!
i guess its safe to say every single sheep in this photo is no longer living with us today, i hope the same can't be said for the people!!!!
wonderful exposure Gert, it all looks fantastic with the colors and lighting and the sporadic placements.
and no, i don't think i see anyone picking their nose :)
mesutilgim (72900) 2013-08-30 13:23
Hello dear Gert,
Also this oldie is timeless ! Of course first of all your pov (from the top af a minarette) is unique.
Most probably it was not only a simple sheep market but a few days from the Abrahamic feast, on of the two major islamic feasts.
TFS and have a nice weekend
zoomer (4225) 2013-08-30 14:00
Hi,you continue to surprise with the excellence of your scans. This is a superb market scene, full of life detail and color.Friendly regards Wolf.
nikkitta (8885) 2013-08-30 18:13
I cant believe its an old picture, great technique
The capture fully deserve being scanned, a rural view plenty of local color, being the white of the long clothes quite eye catching
You were lucky to visit that very far away and uncontaminated place (tourist )
Urs (14078) 2013-08-30 18:21
That is an excellent POV, from a minaret, I guess I should try a similar approach when they allow me to clime up to the top of the minaret. A sheep market from above ... that is a great idea and looking at your scan, you did a great job.
Graal (92118) 2013-08-30 23:38
another nice your remembrance from Algeria. Interesting scene and scenery. Quality of scan is superb. Photo I like.
Have a nice day.

I'm glad to see you keep uploading these images taken decades ago in all those fascinating places.
This is a great aerial shot of a daily life scene. The mosaic made of people, animals and their shadows is so captivating I could look at it for hours.
As always, makes me wonder what would an image taken in the same place today look like.
Great title too! :)
Have a nice weekend

Ciao e buon fine settimana
rychem (13584) 2013-08-31 8:43
Beautiful scene in a desert town, the scanned photo is excellent, I like the long shadows of people and beautiful colors preserved on the slide
Glint (5911) 2013-09-01 0:58
this is another of your photos that invite us to stop awhile and enjoy the details. I like the man on the right who appears to be talking to his sheep. You've captured a nice light too.
I like the colour palette but a silly thought popped into my head - that 'Where's Wally' would be easily found in this crowd. I have also enjoyed following your link to the other photos you took at this time.
limielski (2571) 2013-09-02 14:26
An untypical POV and because of this - your shot looks very interesting!
Whole composition is balanced perfectly. I mean not only the colouring but but the shapes and localisation of different elements on this picture. TFS.
PS. Interesting note!
mirosu (8046) 2013-09-02 20:49
Excellent bird view to small sheep marker. You got it in excellent light and superb clarity.
Thanks for your comment to my Bratislava photo. You are right, Bratislava has also nice old town. You can see part of it on photo I've posted earlier.
agjika (4309) 2013-09-07 1:36
You have filled the frame fabulously here. This photo could have been 500 or even 1000 years ago. Lovely light and the distribution of the whites is very uniform.
adores (30783) 2013-09-11 16:35
Seems you had a fantastic view from the minaret. I like this one a lot. The fair is fantastic from this high pov. A simple fair but so full of life with all these sheep and men using turbans. A really authentic fair.
daddo (20621) 2013-10-09 16:30
Hi Gert. I wonder if the title is a pun of sorts, for in many ways we humans are like sheep. Another fine shot steeped in local colour and tradition. Worth climbing the minaret for this POV. I like the colour and the details are fine regardless of size. Best wishes. Klaudio.
Miguel82 (14376) 2013-10-14 11:54
A value report from the 70's, the clothes of that time are visible, good pov maybe from a balcony, crowded market with sheeps and goats I prefer goat meat there is less fat than lamb, high resolution, nice colors, good evening Gert
tatadalou (3975) 2013-10-19 9:21
Lovely warm tones. I'm surprised to see such an old pic with still such a high quality ! The sharpness and contrasts are excellent. I like the high point of view that permits to see a global view.
yquem46 (35290) 2013-10-19 9:27
I like this one shot from above
Allows us to see the busy crowd
I've seen recently souks in the open field in Moroccco. obviously things have not changed
best regards, have a nice WE

It is a men's story. Women a missing in the composition and in the life of everyday. You made your best Gert and your sharing is so generous. Thank you for large format!
