For the last several weeks I have been showing only new photos from Estonia and Lithuania. Although I have several pictures left from those countries I feel it's time to return to my never ending supply of oldies.
This is from somewhere in the centre of Constantine, third largest city of Algeria, in the autumn of 1975 (almost 38 years ago). You can see from clothes and hairstyles that the 1970's were very much the 1970's in Algeria too.
I have as usual scanned this from a Kodachrome slide. For the first time I upload a photo in the new larger size, hoping that the sharpness will be good enough for this enlargement.

Superb! It looks like a view from some French movie, it seems that Pierre Richard is not so far from this scene.
Very very nice photo and perfect quality, not every digital "soap-box" could gives similar quality.

Interesting reportage photo from Your archive.
Curious scene from street.
Good frame and super colors.

Ciao e buona serata

your scanner is always good quality,,,in this one if you don't write i cannot recognize, the light was good and the colors rendering is excellent as the details, is strange to see almost man in the street...but we are in islam....good work..

such a vivid and extremely clear photo, a great impression of the place, the people, the flowing movement in a busy downtown street. I like very much your point of view that has offered a very solid and interesting setting and a view over the massive body of passers by that's captivating. It's so interesting to watch them for the character (and fashion:) each one displays, the "crowd" consists of interesting individuals. The sense of depth and the richness of the colours are magnificent. A very pleasing photo, congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely evening,

Hi Gert. I see quite a bit of leg here, something which I am sure has disappeared from the Maghreb. The bell bottom trousers and colourful shirts bring back memories of the times. A lively scene and a reminder of a more peaceful period in the history of the region. Having said that, the Algerian War of Independence must have been in the memories of many in this crowd, when more than a million Algerians died in their battle to throw off the French yoke. I suppose in any crowd there will be someone involved in a nasal operation. Regards. Klaudio.

That's how it looked at that time. You were in Algeria while I was often reporting from the neighbouring country, Morocco. Vibrant colour hues with high sharpness I would say.
It would be great if you could explain how you scan these slides. I have countless Fujichrome colour slides which I would love to turn digital. So far I did not have luck, because some labs produced hopelessly wrong colour tones which I had to correct in Photoshop, it took me ages and I'm still not happy with the result.

This Algerian image truly carries the memories of the seventies, when probably I was only four years old.The dress style was certainly different and this style had carried upto the early 80s.Good old sho.Very well done.TFS.

Hello Gert - I am looking at this in the beta version and the quality is exceptionally good. Colours are bright and clean and the sharpness very good. At this size all the details can be enjoyed; the clothing is so obviously the 70's and I expect disco music to start playing at any moment. A colourful and vibrant shot with so many small details to enjoy. Warm regards rosemary

In a crowded street, show, culture, religion, way of dress and social customs of a nation or a region
Archive Gallery, excellent, and I love old photos Congratulations and good luck my friend

What a wonderful hustle and bustle almost frameful of street people, a collection of faces and striking colour combination which has a certain retro feel about this classic of yesteryears. What strikes me are the similarity of men's hair styles -ala George Best, bell-bottoms pants - ala John Travolta and the old citroen but what does not change perhaps is the traditional burkha worn by the elderly and the background buildings. It's nicely composed shot full of life's rich variety with interest through the frame the kind of picture you look at for quite a while. Well captured journalistic with a strong feeling of place. Congrats

Looking at those leisure suits bring smile to my face--yes, I used to wear them. Good nostalgic image from the past. Good lighting and nice details. Well done, tfs.

Lep pogled na mesto i trenutak ...
Dobar rad skeniranjem, lepa fotografija.
Prijatno vece i sve najbolje sa lepim secanjem na 1975. godinu.
Nice view of the place and the moment ...
Good work by scanning, beautiful photos.
A beautiful moment.
Good evening and all the best with the beautiful memories of the in 1975. year.

It seems that the decade is much more obvious than the location, or even the continent! There is obviously strong French influence visible. I could imagine it has faded till today. Quality of this slide is astounding.
I tried to look modern photos of Algeria in TE to see how cities look nowadays, but almost none seem to be around.
Glint (5919) 2013-08-21 13:32
another fascinating glimpse of the past from your lens. This one of those to look over for a while as there is so much to see. The fashion of course but also the contrast in what the women are wearing. A smile too at the man in the foreground who is caught picking his nose.

Hi dear Gert, how are you?
Ya again great archive. It is so amazing I cannot guess this was taken around 40 yeras ago. So vivid and clear presentation. I hope they are happy now and then.
Thanks a lot and have a good day! I am still one the way of trip, Takero
macjake (45588) 2013-08-22 8:35
I'll give you 1 guess what was the first subject that i noticed in this photo! hmmmmmmm........
it caught my attention immediately :)
we all love these old photos you often post, they are so much fun to view and scan with our eyes.
fun looking at the clothes and hairstyles, but everyone looks really good :)
excellent transfer from the slide, maybe one of the best quality ones yet that you've posted, seriously.
funny to think that this photo was taken 43 days before I was born :)
great shot Gert
worldcitizen (5629) 2013-08-22 13:06
Thanks for another fascinating old shot. I like all of the colors and activity in this scene. It looks like such a vibrant place, with lovely architecture. I wonder what this exact spot looks like today...
agjika (4309) 2013-08-22 13:12
This is a remarkably good quality photo considering the year it was taken.
I am a bit surprised to see how French this whole scene is even though I know quite a bit about "les pied noirs!".
Thanks for sharing

Superb quality of the scan. Wonderful colours and sharpness. I can say I don't see the
meaning difference between analog photo and digital one.
Sometimes it's a good idea to come back to old photos to see the difference between past years and present time. TFS

Another classic film image from you wonderful archive. I like it, it bring back the way thing use to be. As I get older, I find things change too fast for my taste. I begin to feel more nostalgic about the past. This image take us back in time.
Excellent quality scan and good image of the daily life.
Graal (92174) 2013-08-23 2:32
an interesting documentary shot and presentation here. Fine quality of scan. Nice colors. Interesting street reportage about the daily life in Algeria in '70's.
Have a nice day.

Hi Gert, And now we can admire your archive jewels in big format. it is quite different. We can look at it and see more and more details. amazing quality after 38 years. The colours are fantastic, sharpness. Composition proves that you were always excellent photographer. I do not remember well the fashion from that time, it looks old style. in most part of the photo it could be the photo made in European country. So interesting are a few Arabic women - in black and in white. But we see here mostly the men. Yes, the man in front in a jacket and some bread looks like from other epoch (they were call in Polish bikiniarz).
Royaldevon (21517) 2013-08-23 4:23
It is difficult to believe that this is a scanned photograph; the colours and the sharpness of the definition are very good indeed.
I am so amazed at how similar regions of the world have become. Apart from a few traditionally dressed ladies, this shot could be anywhere in the 70's. (Possibly not England because it would probably be raining!)
A fine, study of the people in everyday mood.
How interesting to see life PMP (pre mobile phones).
Have a great day,
saxo042 (33934) 2013-08-23 8:53
Jag ber om ursäkt, den här bilden har gått mig helt förbi. Jag hade kanske väntat mig en bild från Lettland... Hur som helst, en intressant bild med oerhört många detaljer, man kan skratta åt 70-tals modet...
wolf38 (29116) 2013-08-25 3:36
Hello Gert. Another photo from the "last century". If you only see the photo, little has changed since then. But in reality, entirely new political conditions arose.
Silvio1953 (105599) 2013-08-26 9:59
Ciao Gert, great quality for a scan, beautiful old photo, fantastic scene with a lot of people, wonderful colors, excellent clarity and splendid light, very well done, my friend, ciao Silvio
mkamionka (27089) 2013-08-28 7:37
I like the vivid colors here, it is so eye catching. I like busy compositions in general so this appeals to my taste. Interesting to see all the oldfashioned elements like the old style cars or clothes. I was 3 years old when you took this photo :)
Great street scene here.
The quality is fantastic!
Thanks for sharing,
mcmtanyel (5295) 2013-08-30 17:44
For some reason, my eyes gravitate to your scans of old, well preserved slides. Now I like the light and color management and the composition of this photo but to me, what makes this photo is the inclusion of the Renault 4 and the Renault 16, man, they bring back memories! Thank you for stirring up such pleasant reminders of my youth.
adores (30841) 2013-09-05 16:26
Always great to see your old ones. We don't see many photos of Algeria here and it's true, their clothes weren't much different from the ones we used here in Europe by that time.
A good pov and a very good view of the square, with all these people passing. A good shot of the old days.
