This is a part of the "New Mosque", Djema el-Djedid, built in 1660, near the port of Algiers (Alger), just below the Casbah, the oldest part of the Algerian capital.
I don't know what the man was doing on the roof of the mosque, but I remember liking the view when I took this photo in the autumn of 1975. I still liked it when I scanned this old Kodachrome slide last week. Hope you like it too.
You can see a larger version by doing a right-click and opening the picture in a new window, or go the the beta version.

a very curious scene that dictated your composition. There's a fascinating perspective and an intriguing sense of scale inolving the mosque, the man, the house and the town in the background. In spite of the backlight, there's good clarity for us to understand the character of this district and feel interested in finding out more. The lighting has also dipped everything in a very particular tint that looks like widespread shade. The man's position, figure and posture are mystifying. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great weekend,

Quite attractive and unusual capture, I would like to be there and took it, but watching it I felt a bit dizzy, so high and without protection

An enjoyable bigger version and lovely composition with the workman serves as strong focus point and you have captured great depth in this shot and I like how the challenging warm light balances the coolness of the rest of the image. Indeed section of this mosque looks different and unique in its architecture style, it's crisp, clean shot and excellent overall clarity without blowing off any of the highlights. I think you grabbed the moment to your advantage so well, this is a striking contrasty shot well executed. Great capture, TFS

Il vérifié probablement l'étanchéité du toit si je me fie à sa position.J'aime beaucoup cette ombre chinoise sur fond de ciel à contre jour.

Again a stunning scan from a Kodachrome slide, the quality of the scan is amazing.
There seems to be little that has changes since 1975, this picture could have been taken today as well. Just the way the work is done would have changed I suppose. Today they wouldn't use handwork only.
hejdå och trevlig helg

At least it looks like the man has a safety cable, maybe checking the roof for leaks? Good pov and nice details. Well done, tfs.

L’image n'a rien perdu de sa force. Effectivement, l'on peut se poser la question de la présence de l'homme sur le toit !
Image très riche quant aux détails. La qualité numérisée est à souligner.
Sujet fort bien mis en image.

Hello Gert. An interesting photo by combining the structures (mosque) and the man on the roof. 1975 - a long time ago. The quality of the picture is still fine.
Urs (14078) 2013-08-25 3:33
A strange shot with back light indeed. The POV is dramatic, but it remains a mystery what the man really is doing on the roof. Good scan quality. WEll done

Well done, Gert!
Great scanning result, and your original was well taken too, judging from the well handled exposure of the light. This one has very subtle highlights which bring it to life, and of course the mysterious activity of the fellow on the roof. I won't even try to guess what he is doing, although he could be putting some ropes up to keep the roof on in a wind! With these old shots, one is tempted to say there is no evidence the photo is 38 years old, but on the other hand one wonders if the scene today would be unchanged. I must get my old slides out again and do some more scanning; I love these old travel shots.

En intressant bild, är det månne en sotare som står och letar efter skorstenen?
rychem (13770) 2013-08-25 7:17
It is really amazing to see a man (in a suit?) on this roof. unusual capture, mysterious activity of this man
macjake (45636) 2013-08-25 12:23
hmmm...I wonder what this man is up to now, some 37 years later!
Do you ever think about going back to the same locations, getting the exact same POV's then comparing the two...now that would be an amaziing post for TE.
I like seeing some of the city view on the left, and again, i wonder how it looks today, perhaps there is much more construction.
considering the really harsh harsh light, the photo came out fairly well, not to mention its age.
see you around

good result of slide scan. Interesting details of fragment the mosque. This man probably repaired something. Another nice your remembrance from Alger.
Have a nice week.
Didi (51343) 2013-08-31 8:13
Good frame quality of the scene but there is too much difference exposure between the sky and the buildings Even a sohisticated camera has not the eye power of a human
That's why I have done a WS

Dear Gert, good report from Algiers, a guy is doing repairs on the roof of a mosque, difficult light that day of september, some building of the city are visible on a hill in the bg, a value report from the 70's perfectly conserved, all the best, have a nice evening
