Great mcmtanyel 2014-01-19 12:19

Hi Subho,
It looks like waters fed by glaciers have this lovely turquoise tinge. This is a lovely photo of grand scenery. You have mentioned this highest battlefield in the world before, now I am really curious. If you haven't explained before, you'll need to tell us about it. If you have, please direct me to that note.
Regards,
MT

Hello Murat,

Siachen is the second largest glacier in the world outside the Polar regions. It is more than 800 square kilometer in area and all of it is uninhabited.

After a successful military operation in 1984 India has control over almost all of the 800 square kilometer area of glacier on which both India and Pakistan claims sovereignty. Since then India continues to dominate the region having control over all the main high points of this huge glacier. Pakistan too has lot of military deployment in the lower valleys.

Gun fire and artillery fire exchange between the 2 sides is quiet common, but ironically personnel from both the armies fear the harsh terrain, the freezing temperatures, blizzards and avalanches more than the opponent's bullet. In 2012 more than 100 Pakistani soldiers were killed on a single day by a huge avalanche which bulldozed their cantonment in the lower valleys.

India has built helipads at over 6000 m altitude where specially built choppers supply ration to the troops all round the year, making this the highest battlefield in the world.
Sometimes talks are held between the two nations to withdraw troops and save the $300 million being spent annually by each of them to deploy troops at such inhospitable place, but that has not materialised and as of now the status quo continues.
Hope this answers your query.
Thanks for your comments.
Regards,
Subho
