Hi Craig!
That's a preserved area. The surroundings are full of towns and Brasília (a metropolis is not too far away). Besided that, the region was almost devasted by years, decades, maybe centuries of exploitation (gold and other minerals). So, what's left is so weak and sometimes it's closed even for tourists to try to recover some of the nature that once existed there!
Hopefully I could explain it a bit to you!
