Great tyro 2011-05-26 8:33

Hello Rosemary,

This is indeed a stunning photograph. The lighting on the red dunes is absolutely amazing and I can also understand why you wanted to make such a feature of that amazing sky.

You do not actually mention whether or not you used a polarising filter or exactly what processing you did here. However, it is very easy to be critical of the dramatic sky and say that it has been over-processed but I would certainly hesitate to criticise those features at all: I have never been to Namibia (and I suspect that many of the critics here haven't either) but I have read from your prvious comments and elsewhere that skies in Namibia can be incredibly dramatic. There isn't a huge difference in your workshop either and that would further make me believe that your original picture actually approximates to what you saw when you took this photograph.

In other words, I like this one a lot!

Excellent!

Kind Regards,

John.

Smile To tyro: Thanks John!

Hi there John - You are such an encouragement and it is much appreciated! I didn't use a polarising filter but I did expose primarily for the sky; I didn't want blown out highlights as it was the cloud formation which attracted me. Often in such a situation I will stop down one or two stops and work with the shadow areas in PP which are easier to "get back". I quite like the contrast in the shot and feel it carries the dramatic "look" I wished to convey. As you know, quality of shot is important to me but I also feel one needs to express one's "artistic emotions" too and it is not always necessary to be "true" to nature!

Lucky you going on a photographic holiday. I should think about doing something like that, it would be nice to get some cross-pollination of ideas etc.

Enjoy your weekend.

Kind regards Rosemary
