Great feather 2009-02-03 3:02

This is one case where I think the blurred foreground enhances rather than detracts from the image, as it appears that we are looking through diaphanous material instead of individual threads. You framed the image perfectly so the weaver's face appears through a space and she is very intent on her task, making this an excellent daily life scene. From your note I would guess that a Kota sari is very expensive. What is the material? Silk?

Default To feather: Kota Sarees

Thanks for your visit & liking this picture Kath...

Kota saree is renowned for its transparency and weightlessness. It is worn mostly during summer. Cotton yarn of different thickness along with silk is used in the weaving. The silk gives the necessary transparency, while cotton provides strength to the fabric.

Kota sarees rule through summer. Light and airy, these are an excellent protection against the north Indian heat. The history of Kota sarees is linked with the queen of Kota who was from Udaipur the lake city of Rajasthan. When Kota’s heat got to her, the King built a lake palace for her, but the queen still wasn’t comfortable. So the weavers were summoned and ordered to produce cloth that wouldn’t trap the heat, which they achieved by reducing the number of fibres in both the warp and the weft.

Contrary to what you think Kota sarees is not expensive. it comes in a wide range of prices ranging from Rs.500 (GBP 7) to Rs.6000 (GBP 85) depending on the amount of silk & golden threads used.
Best Regards
Angshu

They are cheap, and when you think of the hours of work from the weavers, maybe too cheap. Thanks for the additional information.
