There is something that I am wondering about for some time now. When I upload a photo, I have to select a country and state etc.. I live in a very small country, we don't have states or provinces like the USA or Canada etc.. I don't know how was it done originally, but I suppose someone at some point just chose some big cities and listed them as states in my country... This is just not true. Even if we pretend that those "states" are, say, geographical regions, than there are several regions in my country that I cannot select from, because they are not on that list. So today when I uploaded a photo, I had to choose a city (in the "state" field) that is not that close to the location where I took the picture. Now, I don't expect from TE system to know every city in every county in the world. But on the other hand, to my understanding TE first goal is "learning more about the world through photography"... Learning about the world! So isn't that a problem? Say that there is a tourist that wants to visit my country, and visit a location that he saw in a photo posted on TE, isn't it fair to expect that the location will be correct? I would very much like to hear what other people think. Thanks Tom G. |

Hi Tom, I had the same problem with Santorini in Greece. I found the "state" by locating other pix of Santorini on ET and looking to see what "state" they had assigned. Sure enough, when I chose it, Santorini was in the city list. Hope this helps.

Into the menu Statistics are listed all the countries of the world, divided by continent. For each country ther's a link "view map" (<a href="http://www.trekearth.com/map.php?ctr=Israel" target=_blank>Here</a> is the link for Israel) which shows the geographical classification used by TE (may be states or administrative regions or geographical areas or so on).
While passing with the mouse over the name of the state, the corresponding area enlighten in the map. Hope this is useful for your doubts. Matteo |
