Great avene 2008-07-30 13:43

hi Pat,
interesting to read about "lack of space", although it should not come as a suprise - in the US the distances are so much bigger, I guess it's because many of the places developed already AFTER the steam engine was invented and city builders were not confined by the considerations of how far a person might walk in a given time. and coming from Europe MY observation in the US is that this place is not meant for pedestrians :D except NYC and other big cities, you cannot get anywhere without the car, and when asked people tend to give DRIVING directions, instead of pedestrian-friendly directions :) in many towns of New England that I've visited so far there are no sidewalks, so it's pretty obvious who the planner had in mind [NOT pedestrians :)] but I love discovering and trying to explain such differences.
but back to the photo - I always fall for strong diagonal lines, so no surprise I like a lot the simple composition you have chosen here. the colours suggest rain close-by, which was something I was lucky not to have during my one and only visit to the island about 10 years ago. as Barbara says, the upward looking point of view works well to place the ruins agains the sky and to emphasise the beautiful brick texture. nice one :)

with best regards,
Kristine

p.s. I think Israel is THE place where the "lack of space" would be most pronounced - imagine the thousands of years the building has been going on there....

Default To avene: I expect my feelings about crowding are related t

that much of my travels were on the train. I would look out the window and see every scrap of group being used.
