Great pboehringer 2007-05-13 11:29

A typical shot to represent your outstanding collection. The somple foreground really is the right way to go and conferes the special look for this image. Without those ripples it would be a simple and boring sunset image that are certainly overrepresented here at TE. I have to agree with Dennis regarding the lack of EXIF data. TE is about learning and EXIF is certainly an important element for that.

Default To pboehringer: Exif

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your comments on my shot. As I shoot in RAW and then process firstly into TIFF and then into the low res jpeg I cannot bring over the EXIF data. Sorry about that. But I really have to say that you shouldnt get too bogged down with all the technical details that EXIF will provide. My photos are pretty much always the same. I always use a small aperture (F16 or smaller) for maximum depth of field. I also always shoot at either 50 or 100 ISO - never higher. This means that I often get slow exposures - which doesnt bother me at all and in fact is something I often seek in my images. I always use the standard camera metering. I dont see what else EXIF provides that really will help you. There is no secret techical details about photography - it is 90% the light and composition. You only need a basic understanding of the tecnical side to give you great shots - its the dedication and understanding of composition and light that is important rather than all the EXIF bits and bobs that people crave for but really dont do alot more than over complicate the learning process.

My 'EXIF' if you want to call it that, and can be applied to 95% of my landscapes is this:

- use a tripod
- use a small ISO
- use a small aperture
- use grad filters to control the exposure between the dark foreground and bright sky

In addition to that try and look for harmonising compositions and shoot whenever possible in the best quality light. This will mean going to bed very early and being up well before sunrise. I think thats the most useful 'EXIF' that you could get, and this will apply to every shot I take.

Hope that helps.

Adam.
