Also whats the 50mm used for other than portraits?

Combine with good pair of legs in can't be used for many things other than portraits

I would second the opinion of many others that 17-40L would be another nice addition to your kit.

I have this lens and also the 24-70L. They both produce excellent results no doubt, perhaps the 24-70 is a tiny bit sharper. But for the lower price, lower weight, and smaller size I would lean towards the 17-40L.

Plus for those of you who like to use the Cokin P system for circular polarizer filters, I find that the 24-70L is more prone to vignetting than the 17-40L at its smaller focal lengths. This is actually an important issue that sometimes dictates using the 17-40 over the 24-70, so it's something to consider.

My favorite Lens for results ans quality and to make fun is the ef 100 f/2.8 macro. i love it

One additional thing I'd like to add, is that the 24-70L is very durable. In my haste to take some shots recently, I dropped it about 2 feet onto pavement and it was not damaged. So it is obviously very well built but you sense that when you handle it.
