Default Re: How much would you prepare before you went?

Thanks for answering that Narayan - I'm just really interested whether people travel completely openly, with minimal necessary research or with more in depth ideas - I've only travelled once with really very (very) in-depth research - contacts, papers, pre-visits etc to make a film about an organisation working in the tribal areas of South Gujarat and a few other times to photograph or collect things for exhibitions ......oh and an amazing project we did with unemployed people and schools and other groups in the UK and a carpet making village in India, again a pre-visit and lots of work to understand how to make the project work.

There will be a website about this sometime soon.

......but I also like ....I guess from my pre-occupations with street photography .....just turning up and freestyling with my eyes.........that's what I'm wondering at the moment ......turn up somewhere fresh ....or pre-arrange a visit to do something in particular.....

After Francis (Furachand's) posts I've started to think Vietnam would be a great place to go.

uuum! Borneo is one I hadn't thought of at all - sounds like more than two weeks though! You couldn't get much more of a contrast than with Iceland!

The Canadian Rockies - all those snow topped mountains, pine trees, lakes and forests would take some beating...
Closer to home, the English Lake District, The Highlands of Scotland, the Yorkshire Dales and Devon/Cornwall are worth putting in the mix.
Iceland is another, where you are pretty much guaranteed a winter landscape!
And pretty much anywhere at all where the people, cultures and lifestyle are different to my own.
Interesting thread. Nice to see the diversities of opinion on this one!
Best wishes to all, Vicky

I've just started thinking very seriously about Vancouver as a starting point.

Unlimited air miles? Where would I go?

Usually air tickets are not really the main problem for me, except for the Pacific region... so the answer is easy : Vanuatu!

Why would you ask? easy answers again.
- the place I grew up : my home place for my kiddie and teenage years
- incredible tribes and genuine culture (where do you think the bungi jump comes from), the closest to Papua New Guinea, minus the travel hassle and safety issues.
- perhaps the most varied landscapes in the South pacific islands, from volcanoes to drylands and rainforest jungle.
- seaside and diving to die for.
- I speak the language.
- ...last of all, not very well documented : perhaps, for who knows, one of the last photo fronteers.

Nice thread :-)

If I had to return to a place where I have been already: Bolivia

If I had to discover a new place: Bhutan or Tibet
