Great macjake 2012-05-28 1:27

Hi Benny
its great that you included that artwork in the fg because i don't see much visual interest in the bg!
its probably one of the most boring town squares i've seen in a photo! (not your fault)
the architects could have been a little more creative in the building design don't you think? I certainly do!
That artwork saves the photo as its creates a focal point and interest.
Cheers
Craig

Thumbs up To macjake: boring architecture

Haha, good point there Craig. Many Dutch towns were bombed during WW2. Whether by the Germans or by the Americans, the result was usually the same. In both cases there was the choice between rebuilding the original town (i.e. rebuilding the old houses), or going for something modern.

In Nijmegen the original semi-medieval market place (not this one) was reconstructed, other square got more modern architecture. This one - originally near the edge of town - got a cheaper sort-of-modern look. It only became a feature on the map after the Valkburg museum (a splendid building) was built. The artwork in this picture is part of the facelift too.

On the other hand, I do think the 'not very creative' row of houses in the bg is very typical and in its way does have a certain appeal, especially in dialogue with the artwork in front.

Thanks for your comment!

Benny
