Default Ryszard Kapuscinski is dead

Striking news hit our ears tonight. A great man, a great traveller and journalist passed away tonight at the age of 74.
Great loss to our travellers community...

Sad news indeed, he was a great writer, his Africa tales ("shadow of the sun", traduit en français "Ebène"), a mix of documentaries on a short novel style, were unmatched. So appreciated it stormed the bookstalls and was voted best foreign book for the year 2000 in France.

Default Africa

I took only one book with me on my first trip to Africa. It was "Heban" (English title - "The Shadow of the Sun"). and I learned more about this continent reading it than being there.

what a great traveller and writer. what a great loss.

dan, awful news. I love his writing, my favorite author by far. On my shelves I have Heban, Imperium, Jeszcze jeden dzien (One more day), Podroze z Herodotem (travels with Horodotus), Lapidaria I, II, III (III is autographed by him), Wojna Futbolowa (Football Wars)

A master of reportage, a wonderfully sensitive man who wrote beautifully about humanity and its condition.

A man whose loss I feel greatly...

I'm not suprised, he loved Italy and Italians liked him, as far as I know. His latest poetry book was published in Italy first and after receiving an award - finally released in Poland.

unfortunately i had not the time to go there!

I discovered "Shadow of the Sun" 4 or 5 years ago by accident. I was struck by the diversity of the countries he described and above all by the intensity of the description. His style conveyed perfectly how each country could be different from one to another, how life is so fragile here and how strong the relationship could be between people. I was absolutely amazed by that book. I never felt everyday life in Africa so precisely described anywhere else.

I need to dig into his work since I don't know much about him. It's really sad to learn this piece of news.
