Just a small correction to your note: Madeira has no beaches? There are lots of beaches. Most of them are pebble beaches but there are also a few sandy beaches. Praínha beach is an example:

Concerning the beaches of Madeira island: Except for the beach you mentioned, Prainha at Ponta Sao Lourenço (arid like neighboring Porto Santo island) I only know about another sandy beach: in Machico, recently built with sand brought from Morocco.

Praia da Laje - black sand beach near Seixal in the north;

Praia Formosa in Funchal - the bigger one is not sandy but more to the east side you'll find a black sand beach:
