To mjw364: cropping

Hi Mike

Interesting idea, and one that I agree may make the image stronger. My problem is I have an irrational fear of cropping! The only way I will do it is to select the whole image and use...

To GyurMaster: bad manners

Ha ha!! Mind you, the thought of looking up the Iron Lady's skirt fills me with horror!

Sky

Hi Kasia
The way to do it is to change the sky only, by selecting it first. I'll do a WS to show you, if that isn't too presumptuous!

Stuff

Hi John
1. I'll certainly take a look at the site you refer to, as I've been toying with the idea of some black glass for a while now.
2. Yes: polariser and ND filter together may be considered a...

Heroes

Yep: Diane Arbus is a favourite of mine, a liking cemented by a visit to a major retrospective of her work some 15 years ago. I have the same ambivalence as you over "intrusive" photography, and...

To tyro: Wife

Hi John
Rosemary isn't a particularly willing victim! She didn't even realise I was taking this: I just hung back until she was in the right place. But she has endorsed the posting!

As far as...

To mkamionka: pickpockets

Hi Mariusz
You are right to be wary of pickpockets in El Albaicin: that's exactly what happened to me the day after this photograph was made. So you could say this image cost me about 150 Euros......

To mirosu: B&W

Hello Miro
Actually this isn't a monochrome "conversion", as it was shot on Ilford b&w film, so it's always been monochrome! But certainly the toning was done digitally. When I taught darkroom...

To Waylim: B/W

Highway!
Actually, this really is "vintage": at least it's around 25 years old. It was never turned into b&w: Ilford made (and still make) only b&w film, so this was originally developed and...

To Mics: Themes

Hi Michelle
The photograph is in both the themes you mention, and also in my "Street scenes" theme. But when you add an image to a theme, it goes on the last page: maybe that's what foxed you!

overcooked

Hi both
I'm butting in again. I've compared both of John's postings from this location, and to my eyes the former (vertical) photograph looks quite natural: I wouldn't have taken John to task on...

Scanning films

Over the months, I've posted many old film (transparency and print) originals, and often commentators have expressed surprise at the quality of these old images. Similarly I've seen others' scanned...

To RhodieIke: Boring, safe stuff!

Hi Iain
Thanks for your comments on this one. Sadly, though I absolutely agree with you, it's the boring, safe stuff which seems to be much more popular on this site.

Can't possibly be true! Extreme fisheyes are 8mm. Frankly I don't know what it means.

To adores: Old picture

Hi Ana
Well it is quite old, though not Napoleonic vintage! I was shooting a lot of b/w film in those days (nearly 20 years ago) as I had access to my college's darkroom. I spent an awful lot of...

To tatadalou: Battle

Hi Delphine
Yes this is indeed the site of the Battle of Hastings, which wasn't in Hastings at all! By the way this wasn't a b/w conversion: it was shot on b/w film and processed/printed myself....

shutter speed

I don't want to sound like the teacher I've been most of my life, and I suspect you know all this already, but... a rule of thumb to avoid camera shake is to set a shutter speed no...
