You could try the gimp which is a free editing programme which has many of the features of photoshop, I belive (although I haven't looked that closely at it). It can be downloaded from www.gimp.org

Yes, I remember reading that the A1 (and A2) images are less sharp than other cameras. BUT personally I turn all sharpening off in camera anyway - the amount of sharpening depends upon subject, file...
