Thanks for your comments. The image was taken using a 5D Mk II, so full-frame and a full 12mm FoV. I love that combination .....

The Whitby shot needed 1sec @ f/5.6 and ISO800. There was probably some post-process work required but it won't have been a lot .....

There were no filters, no polarisers and very little in the way of Levels adjustments but I *did* underexpose and, of course, at 17mm the sky has a natural polarisation. So, no, the sky...

I would say you are thinking along the right lines although Canon/Nikon/whatever is more a matter of personal preference rather than equipment capabilities - remember that once you buy-in...
