Apologies if this has already been asked, however........

I'm one of those photographers who still likes using film as well as digital and I have a collection of negatives and transparencies that I'm thinking about having scanned (as I don't have a scanner myself).

When these have been scanned to a digital format, is it necessary (or even possible) to sharpen them?

I'd welcome advice from any regular film users / scanners.

Thank you.

Of course, you should!
Sharpening must be done through the post processing stage and not during the scanning process. Scanning should aim to give the most detailed image, hence a bit flat and not sharpened at all (may I recall that sharpening means a loss of details).
