One way to select could be a title like:

150 Photo Favourites from Trekearth

Subtitles could be like:

Nature and landscape

People of the world

Cities, buildings, monuments

The base here could be: Photos already choosen as favourites by TE members

When do we start the themes for this photo-book before people loose interest, then we can see how it will grow and adjustments could always be made under the way ..... ?

What about having the following themes?

As a starting point?

- Landscapes?
- People, portraits?
- Daily life shots? Festivals,
- Decisive moment?

Then we can create the themes and start posting the candidates.

it's a nice starting point

Landscapes
Portraits
Architectural
Religious
Nature
Street shots

Thos seem to be the most popular categories on TE

I dont know for example how you would classify something like a shot of an asian temple. Architectural? Religious? How about traditional? If I look at my photos I see a lot of lantern shots. Where would they be classified?

fine
Add -Others
for people with some ideas for other proposals not fitting in the one proposed yet
and could be also very 'Learning ab....'

Every theme should be called starting with:

"Theme photobook 2005 - Landscapes"
..................
..................
"Theme photobook 2005 - Others"

A short intro can explain and guide what to add with limitation of 3 per member with an example to start and the possibility to ask for removal to be replaced by another.
or
one man start it up taking care of updating and sorting along comment/tips/requests
or
5 volunteers can take care for 1 of the Themes ?
volunteers ?

why not starting one example Theme that could be examplary for intro etc.
or if you prefer someone else to make an example, do request here ?
the honnor is to you Cesar to pick out already one Theme to start as example
then we all could volunteer here for a Theme to monitor ...

oochappan

maybe 6 Themes to start with

- landscape/nature
- portraits/people
- daily life/traditions/festivals
- Decisive moments
- architecture/street/environmental
- others .... to be develloped

Cesar you would start already one Theme as example (the honor is yours) ?
or
do you like to invite someone else to it and keep general organising ?

I think we should define a due date do sent the pictures... maybe someone as a HIT in his pocket and want to upload it... let's say, all the photos upload until end August?

Mario

First announce it on the front page.

jrj

Lots of to and forth..

IF the members interested are, at some time, to upload their suggestions (or connected them to a theme for first sorting) then we will see what's in the pot.. and then we can split in themes for the book. (I take it the themes we talks about here is more for the evaluating of the suggestions)

Of course when the member connect their suggestion to a "pre" theme there must also be a deadline.

Also important, we must define and be sure that any suggestion will fit technical demands for size: I.E photos under 2000x1500 in original will not do for printing.

jinju

If this is going to be a book we need to decide on a uniform style of presentation. Size is the most important but what about things like borders? Everyone puts different borders around their photos, but in a book I think this should be the same for all photos.

I was thinking about themes...

Maybe with ie 150 sheets, that is 300 pages. Let's divide that in 5. We then have 60 "themes".

Let's say instead of making themes based on geography or countries, we present 60 TE photographers! (much or little - well then who will come forward is still to be seen)

Well nothing for those who participate on TE and claim that evereyone else do it for their selfesteem... and really never saying why they are there themself... other than they love something that they alone can catch trough a camera. .. I sincerely don't know as I am in this for the fun of it - and still have not reached the final philosophing lay back attitude where my own thinking and definition of the world is the only "true" way... (I guess that is a drawback by having fun - you loose some philosphical points..)

But maybe interesting. Hmm... who are these people of TE, what are they speciality, how do they work, what are they interests? hmm.

Could be that some would like this... as persons and individuals are as interesting as some geography and landmarks around us.

What do you think?

mlopes
07-05-2005, 12:01 AM
I see it like a challenge...

Personaly i'm here for the fun also, i would be proud to finish this with sucess (or relative sucess), i would be proud to buy some copies to give away to my friends... to give one to the local kids library... that's my aim...

For now, i still think that "learning the world thru photography" is better shown splitting the books in themes and sub-splitting in regions!

But i recognize that your approach is also valid, "learning the world thru the eyes of the members..." well well

For now, i still vote the first one, but interesting approach jack... definitly your style :)

About the themes, i think we should go for Henk'e first opinion Henk:

- Theme TE Photobook 2005 landscape/nature
- Theme TE Photobook 2005 portraits/people
- Theme TE Photobook 2005 daily life/traditions/festivals
- Theme TE Photobook 2005 Decisive moments
- Theme TE Photobook 2005 architecture/street/environmental
- others .... to be develloped

---
About the filtering method i have another sugestion:

- Eachone of the active members in this project should add one photo per theme from their own photos

- Eachone of the active members in this project should add 3 extra photos dispicting the theme but they have to be favorite of at least one member with more than 10 points/comments

- Eachone of the active members in this project should add 3 extra photos from any other members... even if they don't want to participate activly we should ask them for permission to use it.

Doing so this way we are making a good mix between our photos, or own favorits, along with favorits of the others.

Thanks Cesar for your trust, do study first, let Mario, Jack, Rafal, Greg, Herve and all the others animate and give form to it ..... as a matter of fact I think that Mario deserves more the honour for all the efforts he made already so may I invite you Mario to break the ice starting the themes, I know you will have all our support, so let's go for it ?

kikvel
07-05-2005, 04:03 AM
would you?

we shall start, I agree with Henkīs suggestion of themes for the moment

we can still continu the discussion regarding Jackīs approach but let us start the creation of themes!

thanks Mario!

K.
Please just put a warning that the original file hi res should be available, so low res pictures will not be included

two themes were started

TE Book 2005 - Own Photos
and
TE Book 2005 - Other Members Photos

I'll explain this team job, Two themes were created:
- One to post your own photos: TE Book 2005 - Own Photos
- One to post other members photos : TE Book 2005 - Other members Photos

Photos must respect the TE spirit "Learning about the world thru photography" reflecting themes like:

- landscape/nature
- portraits/people
- daily life/traditions/festivals
- decisive moments
- architecture/street/environmental
- other

RULES for your own photo:
- up to 5 owned photos.
- must hold the copyrigh.
- minimum size=1024k.
- at least 3 photos must be marked as "favorite".
- U can withdraw or replace photos.
- Preference to 2004-2005 posts.

RULES for other members photos:
- up to 5 photos from other members.
- request an written autorization from the owner.
- minimum size=1024k.
- at least 3 photos must be marked as "favorite".
- U can withdraw or replace photos.
- Preference to 2004-2005

Generic Rules
- Further on, photos will be placed in more especific and final themes according to our agreement
- Photos from others members should stay in "other members" theme, there can't be the same photo in both themes
- in the final stage the photos from the "other members" theme must be selected and treated: If the member is working activly in the project we just need to ask for a written permission... it the member is not active in the project we must invite him/her to join it.

Hope it's clear, any comment/remark/correction?

Mario

Thanks!

I only see a disadvantage in posting others pictures, you will never know of the hi res is available, unless you ask the owner of the picture

K.

mlopes

it's true, but i'm expecting to get the top photos, or at least really good ones, so we must presume that the hi res is avaiable... 1024 can be printable...

But then i'm also expecting to get lots (i mean LOTS) of photos, we can swap one that the owner don't have the bigger file.

eachone of us will add 10 photos, in wich 6 are favorits, i think i've covered more or less all opinions. We will get a couple of hundreds submissions...

Have you've done the exam? shoudn't you be studying? ;)

1024 can be printable

Just for you in info, printing 1024 pixel at a resolution of 300ppi (pixels per inch) as it suppose to be will result of printed size 3,41 inches or 8,66 cm.

You will now also find the 'rules' and themes for suggestion of photos to the book on the webpage to the project:

* mass transportation (that would include airplanes, ships/boats, buses, trains, metros)

* letīs say: to separate 'major' themes, to introduce a theme related to colors/shapes (as we have here or here or here

this will give room to some more artistic images too.

does it make sense?

I think the themes should be the continents, or main geographical areas where the members come from. It's always my perception that this book is more about us as a community than about India, or Buddhism, or mass transporation, street life, etc.... This would give people an idea of both how we reach out to the world from our own localities, and at the same time, if a peruvian member has only shots of Peru, then it fits perfectly in the south Am. section.
I just do not think to put all shots on one topic, reflects the originality of our project, a wide international membership, instead of topics per chapters like many other books.

as usual, IMO.

Well, why not use the (very interesting) idea of Isabelle about colors and create only colors-related themes? "Colors of the world" could be a great subtitle for the book. There could be less than 10 chapters : red, blue, yellow, green, white, a few others maybe (pink, brown...). One of these chapters could be black&white. Don't you think most pictures would fit in one of those chapters? This would be a cool way of not subdividing the book by geographical area or by themes.
OK this is just a "gut feeling" and I haven't given it much thoughts so there might be many drawbacks that I haven't thought about, but I really liked Isabelle suggestion about colors-related themes.

kinginexile
07-06-2005, 11:53 AM
That's a good idea, but really, many pix cannot be categorized by colors, and on the other hand, I think diversity is crucial to keep the interest of readers. Colors, especially if nice, rich colors, have a temperament, a feeling each one, that seeing a few pages of the same color thematic may be counter-productive to appreciate the pix for more than its color.
I think the main concept must stick as close as possible to TE as we know it, individuals who, thru love of photography, feel like a community, not just a website where people upload pix.

My 2 cents...Ok, 3 cents! ;-)
