    Hello Will,
It's definitely "Juliet" that makes this diptych. It would have been great to have her in just one photo but maybe her immediate surroundings were not so nice. It's still a very good idea to have these two pictures together. I love when patterns are broken this way. It's often the irregularities that make a picture exciting.
    Best regards,
    Gert

    Hi Malgo,

As always, you have given us a wonderfully interesting note and for a music lover such as yourself, this must have been a wonderful place to visit. Did you actually go and listen to any concerts or were you happy just to walk around here admiring Siena and its people while having the music heard in the background?

Two wonderful photographs too - and don't apologise for any lack of sharpness - the subject matter is far more important. This happy relaxed trio of people would have been good enough but the piercing look of the little dog, staring right down your camera lens, is what really adds to the appeal. And, of course, we can appreciate the beautiful stonework of the beautiful building in the background.

Your workshop photograph is fabulous too - demonstrating just the thing which Gert and I so frequently comment upon - three people sitting together, not talking to or looking at each other, but concentrating on their mobile phones or "handies"!

    Wonderful!

    Kind Regards,

    John.

    Hello Malgo,
Maybe not your best photo ever, but there is a nice atmosphere that I like and the wall seems to have a very long and interesting history. It's full of fine details. This is absolutely a photo worth showing.
    Kind regards,

    Hello Les,
The building looks quite well preserved, not really like a ruin. It is still impressive, partly due to the empty and "wild" surroundings. The tree in the foreground has a very picturesque silhouette and the thin clouds are very attractive. This is again a fine B&W photo with an appealing greyscale.
    Kind regards,
    Gert

    Hello Magalu,
I like this photo with beautiful architectural details, a fine greyscale and the man taking a picture of the garden and gardener (or maybe it is a visitor admiring the plants). It is a well spotted moment and a well timed photo.

    Hello Bev,

These Mediaeval Festivals really are so much fun and also provide lots of photographic opportunities too. We used to have one each summer in Lanark but unfortunately it stopped a few years ago.

A lovely photograph with lots of colour and lots of activity too, taken in lovely warm light and with fine composition - difficult to achieve in the "heat of the moment" - with the tower/gatehouse of the castle perfectly placed in the background behind the archer taking aim on his next victim. Wonderful details and sharpness and, of course, a very interesting and characterful sky which you always seem able to achieve whatever the weather!

    Fabulous!

    Kind Regards,

    John.

P.S. An interesting note too. The archers with their bows and arrows really were the mediaeval equivalent of the modern machine gun and were a formidable fighting force. This archer's bow looks a little puny - in the days of Henry V the English bow had a "pull" of something like 160 lb and, what with the amount of practice that archers were enforced to undertake, they developed hugely enlarged muscles as well as deformity of their arm bones.

I've had a look through my archives on TL (not been there for a year or two, I'm afraid) and you might just be interested to read the note I composed on this picture - it gives some details of the archers in days of old as well as giving a pretty graphic description of how a rather resourceful surgeon removed an arrow from the face of Prince Hal (later to be Henry V).

    Hello Les,

An interesting note about the tin, lead, zinc and silver mining here and a beautiful photograph to accompany it.

The ruined shell of the Wheal Betsy engine house is perfectly placed in the frame, nicely balanced by the crooked tree to its right and with a lovely distant view of the hill beneath a wonderful sky. This is another of your fine black and white renditions, perhaps a little more "high key" than usual but with lovely tones and contrasts, fabulous textures seen in the old stonework, and exquisite details and clarity.

    Beautiful!

    Kind Regards,

    John.

P.S. I've seen quite a few images of the Devonshire and Cornish tin mining engine houses here on TE. As they seem to lack any form of "winding gear", I presume they were not built to carry miners down the mineshafts - were they simply used as pumps to drain water out of the mines?
